Can anyone in the south east (surrey) do a bit of stainless welding for me MIG/TIG, the internals of my R100GSPD exhaust have shat them selfs and l need to removed them to stop them rattling around in the silencer, the stainless is quite thick for a exhaust and l will be cutting along the seam so it should weld up quite easy l would use my arc welder with stainless rods but l dought it would be as good as MIG or TIG.

Remember when the sidestand snapped off my XR400? There's a bloke who I went to after a bit of asking around in Send just off the A3 near Guildford.

TBH he didn't do the neatest job but it was OK. If you don't have any other luck I can find his number.

If you attempt to weld it with a stick then give it to someone else to fix they will be upset.

Cut it very straight (zero/absolute minimal gap <0.5mm), make sure it's clean (inside and out) and the right person will do it free of charge.

Look up a stainless steel engineering company, pop into reception and ask for a quick favour. If you have it prepared properly it will take less than 2 minutes to weld.

Good luck.

Fucked it up Rolling Eyes

Cut a door in the side thats against the bike and not seen and got half the rotted inner seaction out and welded what was left back into place with some supports but made a arse of welding the door l made back up keeps blowing holes, dont think it would of worked anyway as after l got the rotten bits out it would of been pretty much straight through.

£350 for a replacment Sad

and a bottle of pure argon not argon CO2 like for mild steel, ive done it at work, you could get away with argon CO2 mix

I tend to run an argon co2 mix with mild steel anyway as it seems to make a cleaner weld

Not with stainless. Whistle

CO2 makes it burn hotter too.

Pure Argon is not necessary for Mig welding stainless, in fact it produces poor results. Using pure argon leaves tall cold weld profiles. The most common gas mix for general purpose stainless fabrication work is Argon + 2-2.5% CO2. The CO2 is added to act as an arc stabilizer and also increases 'wetting' of the parent metal which encourages the weld pool to flow better. There used to be a gas mix available for Migging stainless which consisted of Argon + 1-2% Oxygen, although I haven't heard of anyone using this for many years.
For high integrity work one of the Stainshield gases from BOC would be used, these are a Trimix of Helium + Argon + CO2.
The only time you would require pure argon with Mig is when welding aluminium.

TIG welding stainless is a different story, pure Argon, pure Helium or a mixture of both are used. Any of the oxidising additives used in MIG gases would destroy the tungsten electrode very quickly. BOC do a gas in the Stainshield range called Stainshield Tig which is Argon + 1.5% Hydrogen, blended specifically for Tig welding stainless steel.
