Hi Guys

Does anybody know if these things are supposed to get hot? mine was red hot after going out for a ride today. Is it going to fail/failing at the moment?

Regards

All that excess voltage has to go somewhere, usually as heat from the fins on the regulator.

It's the reason behind the fins, heat dissipation. If insulation on wres is starting to melt, you have a problem. Otherwise it's doing what it is meant to do.

As above. That's why they have cooling vanes.

If you are concerned, making sure it's in somewhere it gets some air flowing over it and bolting it to a big metal bit of the bike for heat sinking are both good ideas.

It would be a mistake to assume the manufacturer put it in the best place, you just need to look at a VFR750 to dispel that one (attached to a flimsy bracket, under a plastic fairing and with no cooling fins, then they act all surprised when they fail).

I've even known people fit computer CPU fans to them BUT yes, they get pretty damned hot as standard and this is normal. They get less hot the more power you are using for the bike which is the main reason I have my headlights on most of the time on the VFR.

didn't know they were supposed to get red hot, it hasn't got any air flow round it at all as the manufacturer put it under the seat.

The rectifier/regulator on my bike is fitted under the seat just in front of the battery box.It does not come as standard with a heat sink so I made my own using a suitabley sized piece of ally plate. This increases the surface area of the component,so aiding heat dissipation.

In the past I have seen suitable ducting going to similar parts.

"Red hot" does rather sound like it is getting too hot. I would expect it to be hot but not plastic melting hot. Heat does kill them (even though they generate the heat themselves).

Take it off and clean the mounting position (so no corrosion, paint, etc between it and the frame), add a heat sink if you can (don't further block the airflow) and see if you can aid airflow.

All the best

Keith

I always thought sticking a blob of that putty stuff they use on CPU heatsinks under them if they are bolted to a metal part would be a good idea.

Many thanks for your replys guys, I think i'm gonna run some tubing of some description to aid cooling and maybe change the reg/rec at some date to a more modern mosfet type which don't generate the heat so much. See thread
