I bought a vacuum. Unfortunately, it's useless, as it doesn't reach into the sump (there's a baffle I understand).

I can't loosen the sump plug- even after soaking it in wd40. I have broken a socket this afternoon trying. It just won't budge. I am astonished that some numpty has tightened it to this extent (the friendly machanic, I assume, which the previous owner took te car too - clearly a clown).

I am thinking I might have to go for it via the filter. How practical is this?

I might take it to Kwix Fit.

Oh life, why do you taunt me so

try some actual penetrating fluid - plusgas or similar, wd40 will do nothing.

Try using a socket which fits 100% as if you've broken it or rounded it off then it probably didn't fit, lest you bought a tool made from cheese.

Then use an extension bar (a hollow steel tube will do) to try and undo it....

Else just bring it to a mechanic.... the kwik fit deals are often cheaper than buying your own oil and filter and doing it yourself. Some sort of loss leader I suppose so they can get you in and make up problems with the car and charge you for them.

But I know mercedes use a vaccuum sort of thing to suck out the oil from the engine as it gives them a faster turn around time than letting it drip out.

I assume you were turning it the right way. Have you checked to make sure it's not reverse threaded?

It's not budging either way. I am anti clockwise. I have tried socket and big old wrench. No movement at all (just rounding off).

I have a silverline oil extractor but the tube goes so far down the dipstick tunnel, and stops. There is something blocking it.

Take it to a garage, oil changes are cheap. Not worth scrabbling around on the drive to save a few quid imo.

I've booked my car into National Tyres for Sunday afternoon for the grand sum of £32. For the time plus the cost of oil and filter it's not worth doing myself.
