If you can beg/ borrow a small compressor then this is super kit

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/diy-air-brush-kit-cab1h

I have not tried but I guess that for a small job you could rig up an air supply from an innertube + one of those cheapo (£5) tyre pumps

If you go a bit further then they do one with a can of propellant

Just what you want

You will be surprised. Spraying (on a small scale) is easy enough and once you have brightened up the first couple of items you get 'hooked' and start thinking of other jobs which would look much better spray painted than hand painted.

I have a BMW F650 CS (the belt drive job) and the Rotax engines on those are painted and prone to the paint lifting with corrosion on the alloy casing

I scraped off the thick corrosion then soda blasted the main engine casing (soda blast = baking soda in a shot blaster gun = super surface preparation / cleaning on alloy with no damage) annd then sprayed the engine with Hamerite smooth silver. That is a near perfect match to the original. I used the £9 Machine Mart spray.

So you just used Hammerite Smooth paint on the engine? What about the heat?

The Hamerite has been on now for near a year - no change ie copes perfectly well with the heat. However, note that the barrel & head were not sprayed, only the crankcase. It may cope on the barrel & head as well, I just do not know.

I sprayed about 5 thin coats and left each to dry off at least 4 hours with a gentle warm air blow from a 500W fan heater about 2-3 metres away

Thats useful to know, always thought you had to use heat proof paint.

My engine casing could do with just that, I don't have the equipment to blast the engine though, I guess sand paper would give a half decent result, providing I work at it long enough?

So long as you have a compressor then the kit for soda blasting can be a VERY simple DIY job

https://www.garagenight.tv/diy-soda-blasting-build-your-own-rig-cheap/

I had a normal grit blaster (which was only about £15) so did not have to go the DIY route

The advantage of soda blasting - esp if you are cleaning up a carb or the like - is that when all is cleaned you simply wash the item with water and all the soda just dissolves. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) costs about £3 for 1 kg in most oriental supermarkets
Wear a mask when blasting - it tastes 'orrible
