If the powder is electrostatically charged to stick to the part does that mean the part has to be metal (forth electro bit) or just able to hold a static charge?

I have a dent on my swing arm. I'm using a compound to flatten it out but if it's not metal based will it matter?

It should be a body filler with metal partials but even that isn't guaranteed to work. The bigger problem is that a lot of fillers will crack or fall out when the powder is baked.

One of the reasons a lot of custom bikes have painted frames is down to the amount of filler they use to blend in the welds.

Some non metallic materials can be powder coated. If you're using a filler compound then it's advisable to check with your powder coater as some fillers blow of during the baking process.

Edit: Beat me to it Marki

I used that JB weld. It says it's heat resistant to 300deg and the powder coaters say they bake the ally parts at 200 so should be fine.

I've put in on over quite a big area but really it's quite a thin layer. It wasn't a big dent and I managed to heat up the arm and use a lever to pull out the bottom edge. Just the bit above that that had stretched that I needed to level out. I sanded it after this and most of it came off.

I'll post up a picture after and we'll see how the powder goes

As myself and kestrel mentioned the rate of thermal expansion of the two different materials can break the bond between them. There is also the risk of air bubbles getting trapped in the filler. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

Did the powder coating guy suggest JB weld?

They mentioned devcon but they also said they don't deal with this sort of thing. They just clean and coat it.

Worst case is that I buy a better swing arm or have this welded and sanded back down. I'll see how it goes and post up the finished result

JB weld appears to work fine on ally parts being powder coated. These were baked at 200degC

The guy said after the first coat you could see and round mark where the powder was around the JB weld so they coated it again. The extra layer sorted the blemish so that may be something to consider.

Overall good results
