Right, I know there are loads of threads about this but just want to make sure as it is going to be a long term bike.

Will using a car oil in a bike do any harm? (aslong as it doesn't have friction modifiers, I know about that)

The oil in question is Mobil 1 as a friend can get it for cheap.

Just want to double check, like I said.

Cheers Thumbs Up

I've used car oil to good effect. Avoid fully synth.

brands used:

carlube 15/40
halvoline premium 15/40
GTX high mileage 15/40
comma highway 20/50

Why take the risk if the bike is a keeper?

Your talking a few quid every 5000 miles.

Halfords semi synthetic bike oil, 18 quid for 5 litres.

top end on my fj1200 was fine and showed no apparent wear when I did the camchain at 80k odd. It had done 30k on halvoline premium.

I suspect it will be fine for a bandit 400.

if money was no object we would all using Krytox.

Hi

Used car oil in bikes loads of times (including fully synthetic). Only one that gave clutch issues also gave clutch issues with new plates and bike specific oil.

All the best

I do oil changes about every three months anyway.

Why not fully synth?
I think its semi anyway.

So the general consensus is it will be fine then.

I use Castrol GTX in the R6, and service at normal intervals. Not noticed any difference.

Can have friction modifiers that mess up wet clutches.

Avoid anything with "energy conserving" on the tin as well.

Hi

Any oil can have friction modifiers, irrespective of whether it is synthetic or not.

That said a big advantage of synthetic oil is that less additives are required to give it a decent viscosity range, and it is these additives rather than the oil itself that wears out. So a synthetic oil should last far longer, but with the nominal mileage it is thrown away at on bikes this isn't really a gain.

All the best

Keith

So aslong as it hasn't got friction modifiers, chuck it in?

Out of curiosity, what is it you're looking for? Magnatec can't be used in bikes with a wet clutch, but it doesn't specifically say it has friction modifiers.

Thanks

Would it be obvious if the "wrong" oil was used? (Clutch not working properly, etc.?)

I just put some 10W40 synthetic car oil in my bike; didn't notice until I'd already changed it that it's rated SJ, while the manual says to use SH. (It's not energy conserving, though.)

I've used Wilkinsons 10w40 in both my bikes and never had a problem. Infact, they both love it!

£13 for 5 litres isn't bad either. The Honda's going to live on it from now on Very Happy

I've always used supermarket 10W/40, cheap as chips and no problems whatsoever. I do tend to change it rather more frequently than the service schedule recommends though.

My old xs650 hack gets any 10w40 that's cheap and remotely oily. The 748 gets Motul 300V Factoryline 10w40 Fully Synth, as recommended by the local engine builder.

Its one of the reasons Krytox is so bloody good, shame its 100 quid a litre.

I am tempted to get some for my gearbox and final drive, it should outlast the rest of the bike.

I always use the cheap shit 10W/40 car oil from Halfords. Even more so if it comes with a set of free screwdrivers.

Never any problems from me.
