Glasses fogging inside lid

Ok, it's getting near that time of year again when I start my futile search for a way of getting the 10 miles home without getting so fogged up I can't see where I'm going.

I've got a fog city, and this works for the visor 95% of the time. My glasses are a little bit more of an issue. Can't wear contacts or have surgery due to medical reasons, so I'm stuck with them.

Now, in the dry, this ain't a problem. Crack open the visor a bit and job's done.

In the wet though, even if I only open it to the first click on the visor, the rain runs down the inside, meaning I can't see through that.

Any suggestions, or is it just one of those things...

Breath deflector. Some helmets have them built in. Mine doesnt so I have a slightly uncomfortable thing sitting inside it, but it works


downside is it covers your mouth and nose, so any conversations with lid on are quite a bit more difficult to understand...

but breathing keeps your neck warm

Would it be rude of me to correct the previous post to say "a well designed breath deflector"?

My previous helmet had one that kept my breath off the visor but deflected it back onto my glasses. Removed it and the problem was considerable lessened.

Had thought about those, but most seemed to direct the steam upwards rather than downwards. Might see if I can get a couple of neoprene masks and superglue bits together to make something that works, if nothing else comes up...

Do you put anti-fog stuff on your glasses? Proper spray or just fairy liquid should help.

Have you experimented with the vents in your helmet?

Yeah, the vents don't seem to make much difference (it's an HJC AC-10).

I was toying with the idea of running a thin strip of silicone sealant around the top of the visor opening on the lid, and the top of the visor, to try and stop the drips coming down. Not sure if silicone will damage the lid tho...

I find they are okay with my glasses, you just have to faff about when you're installing it to get the fit perfect.

Edit: Contact lenses are really the best solution but get expensive - which is why I went back to glasses.

I used FogTech wipes last winter and they worked brilliantly, lasted 4~5 days before they needed another wipe over and each wipe lasted me about 3 weeks if it was put back in its packet and sealed up

I've got a breath deflector in my lid, and I have to shape the bit of metal at the top of it to make sure it sits against my nose every time I put my lid on (if my specs are likely to fog up), with that and keeping the visor open a bit, I've not had an issue so far.

Sounds gross but spit on the lenses of your glasses, wipe it round then clean off. Stops things fogging up temporarily

The one Im talking about works, your breath all goes downwards. It basicly sits around your nose and cheeks, and has velcro attached to the inside of helmet foam.

And I leave it in the helmet, occasionally need to adjust its position, but its not an extra item I have to put on each time.



it might not be as comfortable for the speccys as it sits on your nose, probably just below where your glasses sit.

I used to have a similar problam with my Glasses all the time had to open visor when stationary. i don't seem to get it at all sine i change glasses to Oacklys, there not cheap but they are brilliant on the bike ans they do not have the bit the drops down behind the ears so they go in a helmet really easily and as I say they seem to have fixed the steaming up problem.

I believe, although I could be mistaken, that you can also have glasses coated at the opticians to stop them misting up.

No harm in popping into your local and asking though At the moment I just grin and bear it for 10 seconds with my visor up until it clears. But I'm in slacker mode at the moment

Nothing works for me - I have to ride along with the visor up then turn my head from time to time to ged rid of the rain droplets...

I got a little tin of Bob Heath anti fog spray last time I was in J&S and it works a treat, much cheaper than the fog city wipes.

Ok, have pretty much solved my problem.

How?

Well, you know some helmets have a chin-curtain to stop draughts? It was that same thing that was causing the steam to get caught and not exit stage south.

I ripped the bloody thing off this morning when I figured it could be causing the issue and bingo. All the way to work with a clicked-closed visor and no steaming.

So if anyone else gets a similar issue, and has one of those chin-warmers, rip it out!
