 |
|
Recently noticed a film of oil and a few rings of dirt on the left fork.
Obviously it's not dripping oil or anything like that, but I'm having fork gaiters fitted next week, so would rather have the seals in good nick before putting them on.
The right hand stanchion is ok, but when I run my finger over the left one, I can feel the grease-like surface.
Is it worth worrying about?
Here's a few pictures:

Theorist.
Source a piece of stiff plastic or a thin feeler gauge. Wiggle it down between the fork leg and the seal, and work it all the way round. Wipe fork leg clean. Re-evaluate issue. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I had a think about it and decided to have new seals fitted.
Considering that gaiters are going to be put on, I may as well renew the seals at the same time, so I'll know they should last a while.
Thanks for all your input though. |

Hiding or doing a botch job are hardly worth the hassle when you consider doing a proper job only costs a few quid and is not a big job compared to getting the forks reground and replated later.https://www.avufo.info/g.gif |
Cleaning behind the seals is hardly a bodge, (note spelling), job and why would he need to have the forks rechromed?
If you have no oil build up on top of the seal and no oil dripping down the leg, it just needs a clean. You get small particles of dust and dirt trapped between the seal and the stantion that allow a tiny bit of oil to get past but they don't need replacing. There's a lot of pressure behind these seals and when they need replacing, you'll know about it.
To do the job properly, you need to strip the forks completely, clean all the old oil off the internals and you will more than likely have to replace the bushes, (if any fitted), too. It's not what I'd call a "small job". ____________________ Space Is Deep |
