Right, I'm sorting my old PC out for someone 'cept it doesnt want to know.

Turn it on and it powers up but I get nothing, no monitor output, no beeps, not a sausage (and I could do with one cos I'm hungry). I've tried starting it with nothing on - no cards, no drives, no ram and still nowt.

Can anyone suggest anything before I consign it to the scraphead and give the prospective new owner the bad news?

Shocked

If it starts up ok, it sounds like that for some reason you either have a bad graphics card or the monitor is playing up.
is it a seperate graphics card?..agp? or pci? or onboard? if you could borrow one then u could test the card.
If your monitor stays blank, it might just be a busted monitor get a friends monitor to try......

Thumbs Up

If the gfx card was knackered then it should beep. Although the pc speaker might be busted, which would be a nightmare. I doubt it's that though. Check it's connected up right though.

Haven't actually ever tried this before but would the power supply come on even though it wasn't actually connected to anything except the mains? Maybe that's all that's happening. Either faulty connection to the motherboard or the board is gubbed.

Have you got a spare duron you could try? I thought it would have beeped for that too but I can't be sure on that. I'd say it's the motherboard.

Ah-ha!

Sorted it. Well, sorta. It beeps at me now, at least until I put the graphics card back in when it doesn't. So that'll be buggered then.

I've had the same thing happen with a faulty processor, no post test beeps and the power supply runs. Try swapping out the processor if you can.

Take out the gfx card from your own pc and stick it in and see if it works then.

if it beeps when the card is out, it prob trying to tell you that you card is not in Shocked lol

Anyway when i get a problem with a piece of hardware i tend to go here and ask, they will have the answer for you, just make sure you give them as much detail as possible.

Hi,

Could be a few things.

RSixer....it won't beep with the card out as it would default to the on board graphics.

Could be the processor, but the POST should still beep to tell you that.

Any idea the BIOS manufacturer? e.g. Award, AMI etc. Because if you do, tell me how many beeps and I'll tell you what's wrong. I have lists for each manufacturer, and the BEEP code sheet, which tells you what the problem is in relation to the number of beeps. Sad, I know, but then I AM a computing student!

A single beep should mean that the MoBo is not detecting any faults (well, obvious ones anyway!)

As to ProXimaCore's question - no, you can't power on a PSU without it connected to something (even a case fan would draw power to test it).

The most common thing which causes a PC not to start is shagged memory (9 times out of 10!). Stick in some know good RAM and try that. But again, the POST should beep ti indicate a memory problem (TELL ME HOW MANY BEEPS!!!).

The other (long winded way) would be to try all the components in your own machine, power it on after installing each one and see what happens, this should single out the dodgy part.

Hope this helps, like I say, number of beeps would be helpful. But if it only gives 1 beep, then try my other method of swapping the components into your good machine (be careful here - it's easy to end up with 2 f***** machines!)

Good luck Thumbs Up

Mark

Sorted. Like I said, it gave me the error beeps with the card out but just hung with the card in. I replaced the graphics card (nice excuse for me to buy a new one) and it works now.

I'm just waiting for XP to install now. I may be here a while...
