PostPosted: 01:14 - 02 Nov 2011    Post subject: Plug On Compressor? Reply with quote

Hi guys.

Can I put a plug on the end of my compressor to power it from the mains?

If so, what size fuse will I need and how do I tell which wire goes to live and which goes to neutral?

It is the cigarette lighter type plug that is on it atm.

I think I might not be able to do it because it's a 12v compressor.

Thanks for any help.

I'll give you a clue.

Your compressor is designed to run on 12 volts.

Mains electricity is 240 volts.

Guess what will happen when you plug it into the mains Wink

My pal works for his electrician dad and wired it up to a plug. Thought there was a reason it didn't work.

I think it might be fucked now. Laughing

I'll attach the wires to a 12v battery and see what it does. If it works, I'll just wire on one of the plugs that come on optimate chargers.

He has good intentions. He robbed me 1.5mm cable to wire in some plug sockets. Everywhere online says use 2.5mm minimum. I'll just use the 1.5 for lighting.

It sounded like it went alight, without actually going on fire. I think the fuse saved it. Laughing

Sounds like either your mate's Dad is a really shite electrician, or your mate needs to pay more attention, before he burns someone's house down!

Using the plug from an Optimate won't help you, it's the transformer in the Optimate that converts mains power to 12v.

So, if you want to plug your compressor into the mains, what you need is a transformer, not just a mains plug.

The dad really knows his stuff. His son is still learning and making mistakes.

Sorry, I meant the little square/oval socket type thing that I'd put on the end of the compressor, then I'd plug it into the charging lead for the optimate on my bike.

The only issue is the inline fuse might be too low. Can't mind what amp it was but easy to change out if needed.

Either that or I'll just get one of the big handpumps. Razz

Might not appear to do anything much at all, which is far more dangerous.

So long as on the back of the "socket type thing" it says 12V output and it has a current rating in mA or A which is higher than that written on the compressor.

Just to repeat what others have said, it cannot* be wired directly into the mains power without a transformer (which the "socket type thing" may be).

*excluding more exotic options

Personally I'd say go with the foot pump Wink

I was referring to wiring on one of these blocks.

https://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=7588

As my bike has a charging lead from an optimate charger attached to the battery. It means the pump could be plugged straight into that.

Could you please let us know where you live in case any of us need to get an electrician in to do some work? I'm sure we'd all like to know you mate is hundreds of miles from us so we can't, unknowingly, call his dad and him in. Wink

You will need a meaty transformer.
My large battery charger only just manages it - it has a 120A 'boost' function' for quick charging and jump starting. Even then, it struggles a little with the compressor plugged straight in, but if you have a dead 12v battery in the loop it works fine (presumably helps smooth stuff out etc.)

It's quite possible you'd blow an optimate trying to do it, nowhere near enough currant coming through.

Presuming this is for your bike, why not make some wiring to run it from the bike?

thats a pretty basic mistake, something you would be told from day 1 on the job
check the voltage and the amp rating before you connect anything

There is no point buying any fancy transformer for £15 to power a small pump when a foot pump can be had from ebay for £5 delivered

I fail to see in what way this would be retarded or would fuck my optimate charger?

But thanks for the ripping anyway. Rolling Eyes

I'd also presumed you were powering it from the optimate it's self.

The above is exactly what I have on my KTM (though wired in all myself) and it works fine. Think I've got a 10A fuse on there.

You may have presumed that I was powering it from the charger, but at least you went about it in a nice way.

Yeah, if I remember right the compressor is 10A max so I'll put a 10A fuse inline and see how it gets on with that.

Thanks again for everyone that helped.
