I'm after a big 2 stroke off road/ SM style bike that's preferably road registered.
I really like CR 500 's but they are expensive and finding one that's road registered is going to be a night mare. I don't mind doing the stuff to get one road registered but I'm kind of a little stuck as I'm reading in one place you need lights and in other places you don't? Can anyone clear up the road registering process?
What alternatives are there to the CR? Don't mind going a little smaller say to 350 if it opens my options.
Just going to leave this for whoarage!

Ktm 380 is considered the same animal as a cr. My friend bought one off another friend of mine for 1400 last year with a full doma system and plans to make it an animalistic sm. It's been in the making for about a year though so i've list interest. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Not sure about UK but in the states Baja Designs do all-in-one conversion kits for dedicated off-roaders at around £300. Definitely do-able and perhaps easier than finding a road-registered one at a decent price.
Also, lights aren't a requirement as you can get what's known as a "daylight MOT" (and why you'll occasionally see track bikes on the road). |

They do a 700cc version.
Do consider if you really do want a CR500 style bike - I've talked to/read enough people that have or have had them and overall they seem to be more hassle than it's worth.
I would consider a KTM 360/380.
Go a little further back and they did a 550!
I used to have an 87 KTM 350 enduro - I reckon this engine would make for a pretty fun road bike as no powervalve meant a decent kick when the powerband kicked in.
There are special exemptions for dirt bikes, so you actually need very little for MOT - think a rear reflector, numberplate and horn should do it pretty much! |

I'm fairly sure I read somewhere that a CR500 needs a new piston every 15 hours of use.

Well, I'm bored of the Fazer. The CBR is nice but will probably have to be broken for spares when the radiator goes some time in the near future but I wouldn't buy another CBR of that year.
Just fancy something different, I like the feeling when I'm sitting on a SM and stuff. Also, just the crazyness of one. I feel a bit like everyone has a sports bike, or people kinda just have the 'yea been there done that' attitude towards them.
Insurance is cheap for them too. Even after my non fault accident everything has shot up which means I won't be able to insure anything exciting sports bike wise (675 ) until I'm at least 23-25.

The 360/380 looks nice, deffo will consider one of those if it came up at the right price. Although it looks diffucult

Exactly, gotta love the feeling of hitting the power band which is what I miss from my old little 50, hence why I want another stroker!

Ahh good. I'd heard this was the case but a few people were disputing it saying I needed a load of other things!
Found this earlier, looks nice and has got a good spec too. Its a 4t though .

My course tutor has one at uni, he said the servicing is crazy on it as well as fuel consumption and everything else.
Surprisingly though, the pistons aren't actually very expensive. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Well, I've been reading some more into CR 500's as road bikes and apparently they are good.
MPG is shit, fuel tank capacity is rather small but they're good fun and completely mental!
I've found this which is perfect:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motocross-Enduro-Road-Legal-MX-Lighting-Kit-Honda-CR500-/270711711335?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3f07ace667#ht_1032wt_952
Also found out that (im pretty sure) CRF450 SM wheels fit straight on which means I can get some second hand ones at a reasonable price.
So looking at this bike OTR would cost about £3k:

You're paying a decent chunk because it's in a modern chassis.
The wheels will depend what chassis it's from, but probably a CR, so quite possible CRF wheels will fit - remember a CRF supermoto is a bodge-job though.
I'm not sure where you've been reading, because where I've read has suggested it's a bit of a questionable road bike - though certainly a fun one . |

See I thought that but then compared to this, it's actually very cheap!

Yeah, although it's more of a common mod so there are a few sets of wheels about. There was a set of CR SM wheels on the bay but I think one of them was slightly damaged:

I was reading on banned CR! People were saying they've never had to do anything to them in 10 years! ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.
