tl;dr Painless spot/boil on gum above tooth about a month after toothache. I'm skint so don't want to go to the Dentist unless necessary, will it go away on its own?

I'm normally the first to think WTF? when I see posts entitled "I've chopped my arm off. Should I go to the hospital or ask for advice on a bike forum?" and similar, but bear with me please Mr. Green

I had a horrendous tooth/mouth ache about a month ago lasting a few days, which I thought I'd dealt with by MTFU'ing (read, being skint) and swishing around near boiling salt water a few times a day and cracking on with prescription painkillers that were stashed away for a rainy day.

The ache originated from just above my top front tooth in the gum. This tooth and the other front one had crowns fitted to them in June. However the pain stopped, and while the tooth sometimes feels a little "numb" since then there have been no issues.

A few days ago, I noticed what seemed to be a little "boil" in the gum above this tooth. It will move about if I push it, and when pushed it feels like I've got a slight bruise there though it gives me no discomfort otherwise. It also disappears twice a day after brushing my teeth so I'm guessing I' taking the top off it and allowing it to drain Sick

So, is this likely to be just the back end of whatever infection I had and will bugger off soon; or is it a warning sign of more troubles to come?

If money was no object I'd get down to the dentists tomorrow to get them to have a poke at it, but I'm reluctant in my current financial state to spend £17 ish on just the examination if it's something that will disappear on its own, especially having spent a shade over £300 get the crowns fitted recently (thought it should have been £204 but that's a thread for another day).

With the limited information that text can provide, is a visit to the dentist needed? Many thanks in advance for suggestions Karma

Why did you have to get a crown fitted? It's usually said that a boil on the gum is a sign that the root of a tooth is fucked beyond recovery. But if you've had a crown done then the tooth was probably already fucked to begin with...

I had a boil on the gum after having a tooth out. It had stopped hurting by this point but it still had me worried for a week or so. Eventually i found a hair thin piece of bone poking out of it that i removed with some tweesers. The boil got better immediately and within 2 days was completely gone.

So basically once the cause is gone the boil goes very quickly, so if you've still got one the cause is still present. It's not going to be cheap as on the NHS they'll probably just remove it so you'll probably have to go private to get them to do a nice looking job.

Meh...I probably shouldn't be self diagnosing on the internet as this site and google adventures are starting to scare the poop out of me

I've had crowns on my two front teeth for close to 15 years after smashing the originals out in separate stupid accidents. Both crowns went within about six months of each other, I'm guessing through wear and tear and natural life of them, and so after close to a year of saving I got the new one's done in June. And now this nonsense six months later....

Don't really feel comfortable with my current dentist; gonna go see the one on the university campus tomorrow for a chat Thumbs Up

I'm with a universiy dentist. I get everything done for free but it's dental students doing it and the wait can sometimes be looong. So i get some stuff done private. I'm still amazed by how much better you get treated by private dentists than NHS ones. I'm pretty sure it can actually save you money as they'll fix something and charge you £50 for it. On the NHS they'll ignore it or bodge it until it becomes really painful or a huge problem that costs loads.
My private dentist was £55 to sign up including a full check up and X-rays

Hmm...don't feel especially comfortable with this one either so it looks like I might have to stick where I am. Without a full examination (not complaining about this, it wasn't charged) he reckoned root canal. The shade under £50 for that I could probably (just) afford or borrow, but it seems they'll need to do a new crown after which will then cost a lot of money which I don't have. Particularly having forked out loads only six months ago. And as it's one of my two centre teeth it will need doing.

He also said that they wouldn't be able to see me for at least ten days so I'm guessing they don't consider it to be particularly urgent; which seems contrary to what I've been reading which is OMG ROOT CANAL GET DONE NOW!

Hmph...

A conclusion for the uninterested. Saw my usual dentist today, who was a lot better than the last time I saw him (he may have been having an off week last time - we all get them I guess).

Root canal needed - congrats Joe - but the good news is he reckons he can do it through the crown. Marvellous. So £50 lighter but a lot better than expected. Bad news is that because I'm allergic to penycillin I have to take a different kind of antibiotic over next week that apparently interacts horrendously with booze.

Probably will be metrozidinole, that's what I had last time because I'm Also allergic to penicillin. Glad you only need a root canal, I have another 4 teeth being removed next month. Mr. Green
