Has anybody actually noticed ANY disruption or anything?

There is supposed to be 2 million on strike today but doing my daily rounds making a few deliveries and taking some I've not noticed anything.

The only thing I've noticed is that the roads are a bit less cluttered up.

Guess those public sector employees aren't all that important after all! Laughing

The future wife got to stay in bed this morning, so she was in a good mood last night.

I think that is the only way that I am being affected. Very Happy

About a dozen people outside our building handing out leaflets etc (Got the UKBA office opposite Rolling Eyes )
...and apparently my son wasn't able to get to his work cos the buses weren't running - but strangely the roads appear to be quieter than normal.

My child's school is shut - had a very long winded letter explaining why the stricke was so damn important the other day.

Happily my youngest is not at school, and we have a childminder come to our home every Wed anyway, so no disruption for me!

Bins won't get collected until tomorrow, kids are at home with the missus, can't otherwise tell the difference.

Remind me, the public sector came out in defence of the private sector pensions that Broon raided back in 1998, right? Neutral

No, you say? They laughed and said "We're all right, Jack. Final Salary 4 Life!"? I am all astonishment!

The Realpolitik is that we're a post industrial nation that's dependent on imports, 45%+ (over 50% in socialist pits like Scotchland) of workers are employed by the State, and we can't trade bureaucracy for tomatoes and tellys.

We're not a rich country other than through economic hysteresis, and there's no magic solution to the fact that we're an ageing nation who all want to retire early and live in comfort while others do the work. It's not going to happen. It can't happen, the demographics don't support it. So, strike all you like, nobody is getting younger, and nobody wants to wipe geriatric arses for a career.

Hey, my private sector pension declined in value last year. If I'm very lucky, then if I ever get to retire, my payments over the decades might bring in just enough to make me ineligible to collect a State pension. Thumbs UpVery HappyThumbs Up

Has anyone got a problem with that? Or do we have public support I have been called greedy today and a few other names.
As well as support.
But allot of people are misinformed as to why we are striking.
That is what is griping me.

I don't care about why you're striking. It's essentially because you want more, whatever noble sacrificial spin you put on it.

Do what you need to do, but don't be under any illusions that purchasing power can be put in your pocket without taking it out of mine.

If you don't like your terms and conditions, you can always try to get a better job in the private sector, and free yours up for someone who wants to do it. Been looking around much?

Because they think they are special and should be exempt from the credit crisis the country is going through.

I mean seriously, why should they have their pay frozen, pensions changed etc... LIKE THE REST OF THE COUNTRY!?... when clearly working for the government makes them special! Neutral

They need to wake up and realise it's EVERYONE that is effected by this!

Very Happy

I'm on strike today, it's something to do with pensions, working longer, getting less, who cares. As soon as Tories are in power there's going to be strikes.

...but the Tory divide and conquer seems to be working a treat. Once this lot are out, the public sector will increase, then with the tories in again, decrease... who cares?

I can tell you as a council worker that vast, vast, vast amounts are wasted, it's infuriating, it's beyond comprehension, there's no long term thinking, solutions are reactive, expensive and wide of the mark. And then my boss tells us we haven't got any money for a SHOVEL. It's alright though for a bloke to be getting paid £20 a day call-out incase it snows, since the start of November, yep £400 a month, with no threat of snow whatsoever... Oh yeah, and a brand new 4x4 to drive home every night, using council tax funded diesel, of course.

How about the locker that was built in the bowls pavillion for my hand tools, 2 weeks later I'm told we can't use the pavillion anymore.

Or the thousands of bulbs and plants that were over ordered... or the electric hedge trimmer they bought me ( for the eco ticky box ) when I haven't got a power point to charge it up and the batteries only lasting 30 minutes...

There's more, but the wife is giving me looks as if to say I should be doing something else.

.

Laughing Laughing Laughing One of the renal doctors has just walked in and told us that the entire renal research team has had to run the dialysis clinic because all the nurses have fucked off on strike. To her suprise, the patients were commenting that it was the most efficient, speedy and pleasent day in the clinic they'd seen, and they should know, being there some 8+ hours a day once a week, and given that they are slowly dieing they have reason to be the most cynical of all.....

Strike all you like, I think you should be allowed to do so.

IMO striking is now all about greed rather than preventing exploitation, which is what it was initially for. Education and free labour market means that you should be able to move employers should you not like the one you are at.

H&S legislation guards against dangerous working practices and thinks like minimum wages and working time rules means you are protected against exploitation.

Problem is, as with every bugger in power, the Union leaders like to flex their political muscles from time to time, for whatever ego boost that gives them, however futile it is. Hence striking like today.

You think one day's action will have an effect? You believe that after today the Govt will turn round and cancel reform? It won't.

If you really want change, go on strike indefinitely, that may work. Today is just a publicity stunt for your leaders.

Couple of lectures that I know of are off today.

Mine was still on. Mad

So nothing that's affected me really. Worst effected I imagine are parents to do with schools. Although I'd love a day off when I was in school.

My kids don't want to be off, they love school.

Poor deluded little buggers, they'll just end up paying in rather than taking out. Mugs in the making, like their dad. Sad

Why I'm on strike.
Firstly I'm on a low wage 17k I pay into pension i could really do with the money but I need to think of my future. But I decided to stick with it because I couldn't get a better pension if I tried.
I had good long think about where i was going in life and decided to work hard for the NHS.
Now last year we were all given a choice to keep our old pension or opt into the new. Many didn't now the government says bugger that you all now gonna have to have this pension. It amounts to this pay 30% more work till I'm 70 and then get 30 % less well with all the cut backs we are having to work through and staff shortages growing numbers of sick.
We work hard and tirelessly through these challenges but now they are trying to take our pension enough is enough they cant just keep taking.
I'm not doing this for greed god I need my days wage but the sacrifice is worth it.
I'm striking in some eyes that makes me bad but in others its about doing what's right for the cause.

Not really, for the same reason I never wagged days off school - all my mates were at school, and daytime TV was as fucking awful then as it is now, couldn't think of a worse way to spend a day. Same reason I always have holiday left at the end of the year that I am forced to use or lose - what's the point in taking a day off to hang around the house all day and do nothing?
