When I got pulled, they asked over the radio if I had provisional entitlement for 125cc on my licence...so it may do.

You can show it at a later date when they ask for insurance/licence details to be produced.

I'm not sure it does - provisional entitlement for category A (bikes) is on your license if you ticked the option for it when you applied in the first place, irrespective of whether you have the DL196 (CBT certificate), which validates that entitlement. I suspect it's the same for those who have passed their car test since February 2001 and have moped entitlement as a result, but still need to do CBT to validate it. You'd have to present your DL196 if asked to by the police - or be issued with a 'producer' which means you take it to a police station within a certain amount of time.

Nit: The PNC only stores information on crimes, not licensing details. Those would be from the DVLA system - I hear they upgraded their VIC 20 a Commmodore 64 recently.

But AFAICT, the DVLA don't keep any record of DL196s; it's a paper-only certificate managed by the Approved Training Bodies (CBT schools). If you lose it, you have to go back to the CBT outfit to buy a copy, and if you get tugged, Plod can check that you have provisional bike entitlement but can't check that it's valid other than to ask to see the certificate, or in my case, to just ask "if [I'd] done my bike training thing."

Worst case, even if you've lost it you can go and buy another copy if you're issued with a Producer.

Because the DL196 is a paper certificate and is only valid for a couple of years, this information is not kept on the DVLA database, and as already mentioned the PNC is for criminal convictions only (although some other limited information is also kept on the PNC)

The riding school who issued your CBT certificate will have a record of your certificate number, and every 13 weeks they have to do a return to the DSA at Nottingham where every certificate, certificate number and the person to whom it was issued is sent.

If you require a duplicate and the school who did your origional issue has gone belly up, then the DSA in these circumstances are able to issue a duplicate, but normally it is down to the school who trained you.

If you get stopped by the police and you do not have the certificate with you, then you will usually be issued with an HO/RT1 with a requirement to produce within 7 days.

When I got pulled they asked for my provisional but never even mentioned anything about a CBT, which at the time, I didn't have anyway.
