Contour hd 1080p is shockingly shite!

so i have the contour hd 1080p for making a vlog but im not impressed, on low quality it lags big time, on high quality its fine but obviously uses too much space on the memory card.

The sound quality sucks with and without the waterproof case, the mounts suck and night riding is useless!

The only thing ive found good about it is the good quality and the 2 lasers that allow you to set up the position of the camera.

£200 worth of camera thats useless i regret buying the gopro

Indeed - big memory cards are cheap these days.
Personally I don't think the quality of the gopro is that great anyway, suffering from general wobbly landscape syndrome too often.

Firstly, I have a ContourHD 1080p and I used it to make evey single one of these videos:

Even though Youtube have recompressed those vides (so you're not seeing the original, higher-quality version) I think you can see it produces decent quality results in both daytime and night time if you know what you're doing.

Secondly, when you say it lags I assume you mean that playback is jerky on your computer (since there is no screen on the device, so there is no other way to play back the vids)

This will be a problem with your computer. You can try installing VLC (but I found it wasn't much better) or the Community Codec Pack (which helped me a lot) or you can get a Mac instead of a PC (which completely cures the problem).

Thirdly, on the subject of sound quality you are largely correct. When in motion (even at low speeds) you can pretty much forget about having any meaningful audio. It only works properly when stationary. If this is a deal breaker for you then yes, buy a different camera.

I concur that tape over the mic helps, and that all cameras suffer this issue.

I don't change the settings - I use the same ones for night time and daylight.

If you have the settings wrong in the daytime it can make a difference to the image in that you can end up with it too white or too dark. But in low light the problem is completely different and has nothing to do with settings.

At night time the problem is fundamentally that there isn't enough light, end of.

Unless you're filming at 60fps there's nothing on the camera you can benefit from changing. Just film what you film and then increase the brightness when you edit the clip afterwards. It's not perfect but you might be surprised how much information is actually recorded in the lower colour values that can be brought back with some tweaking of the gamma.

So just set your settings for the daytime and leave them the same for low light. I think I went out on a cloudy day and played with settings to get mine right. I probably err more on the side of brightness but it's personal preference really.
