Hi, I have a GSXR 600 K2 which has been running fine that was up until about a week ago. The exhaust seems to be making the type of sound you hear from an exhaust that has a hole in it except I cant seem to locate any such hole. Anyone any ideas why it would suddenly start sounding like this? Or any ideas where I should be looking?

Thanks

The joins and welds are the obvious places for holes to start.

Yeah... All the joins and welds seem to be fine and all nuts and bolts are done up properly and there appears to be no gases escaping from there.

I have tried covering the exhaust with to see if I could detect any leakage from elsewhere but the only bit I'm getting the gases escaping from is from the drainage hole in the bottom of the exhaust pipe which I suppose is normal.

Spray/throw some soapy water over everywhere there could possibly be a leak. If it makes bubbles you have a leak.

If there's no leak I'd question the integrity of the engine. Is it fully serviced before worrying about more serious stuff.

first thing i would do is block the end of the exhaust,

if the engine runs free it would sujest gas leakage somwhere in the system whigh should be easy to find once blocked up,

if the engine stalls out that would sugest the system is gas tight to which you need to look else where,

when you say it sounds like a hole in there do you mean it has got incredibly loud or does it sound like it is "woshing" like gas escaping elsewhere

question is why?

i have used this method many times on cars and bikes alike and has never given me any problems,

use your hand to block the exhaust and it gives you the indication as described

the question is what is the ops exact problem maybe a video would help diagnose

SoND - Yeah think i'll try the old soapy water trick this weekend.

Night Shadow - Well I did try that. I covered the exhaust (not completely) with my hand to see if I could detect some gas leakage from elsewhere along this tail and pipe but like I mentioned above the only other place I could feel gas coming out from was from the drainage hole. I'm assuming this is normal. And when i covered the exhaust completely the bike stalled. What would this suggest?

It actually sounds like a raspy "wet fart" type sound when you give it some gas.

Hi

Possible that the silencer itself has broken up inside. Had something similar with my Bandit where the silencer corroded through at the back.

On the bandit there were 2 circular outlets, one inside the other (ie, one real one, and and outer more cosmetic one). It corroded through between these 2 bits.

All the best

Keith

if you remove the air box or put different filters on it may sound more rasspy so to speak i would visually check make sure all is conected propperly under there

Kickstart - You were spot on. Had some corrosion up the inside inside. Thanks for your help and to everyone else.
