My winter hack has cheapo aftermarket twin front discs which hate salt. They're relatively new, so dont need changing Sad Every day this week they've been gritting the roads hereabouts and even with hosing the bike down after every ride, the flippin discs are rusty as hell in the morning. Now, if only I could wipe them down with WD40 etc then I'm sure that life would be good - I just wouldn't stop at the first junction though Shocked

OEM's are a couple off hundred quid and I dont fancy spending that on a hack, but surely there's something I can do about the rust?

Would powdercoating them work? (not sure if you can do that to discs though Laughing )

Loosen a bolt on the front brake line, that way everytime you pull the the lever the discs get a nice squirt of oil Smile

If you're using it every day I'd just use them - it should only be minor surface rust anyway and will clear when you use them. Don't WD40 them Laughing

Why are you bothered by the rust? In the time it has it can only be superficial, does it not come off with a bit of braking?

A mate of mine, from Dublin, swears by using a thin smear of grease on his discs to prevent rusting. He says that you have to be carefull to use the high melting point stuff though as you wouldn't want it to melt under heavy braking.

Just rinse it down with cold water in the evening after use then use the thing the next day.

A thin coat of rust is bugger all overnight.

Given that the pads are an abrasive surface, every time you brake, you're effectively sanding them. Where's the problem?

Cheers mate.

Yeah, the contact area will clean itself if used regularly but the likelihhod of snow and ice means that I'm going to get out less over the next couple of months. Anyway, the section below the "contact" area looks like a mess and I just dont like any rust on my bikes at all. Wondered if applying brake cleaner and giving it a wipe down would help?

Stop hosing it down every day.....

Get some ACF50. Treat the bike and forget cleaning it over winter.....
The more crud, the greater the protection.

Your choice. If the rust bothers you that much then as has alredy been suggested coat the entire bike with something like ACF50 and put it away from the winter.

If you wan to ride (even if only occasionally) then you just have to get over your cleaning OCD and accept that a bike used in winter cannot be kept pristine unless you polish it to death after every ride.

Oh and Shereen, think about what you just said again. Powder coating? What's going to happen to it as soon as it makes contact with the abrasive brake pad...... Wink

If you don't want rusty discs, buy some stainless ones. However i hope you're not a fan of being able to stop as they are absolute shite!
Discs get rusty when left wet for a few days. It cleans off as soon as you use the brakes firmly. If yours are always going rusty then you either need to use the front brake more often and more firmly. The disc carrier can can painted as can any part the brake pads don't need to touch.

Sometimes it just isn't worth risking your life if the conditions are dangerous.

When I take my XR250 off road, it sometimes gets mud on the tyres, is there a way to prevent this?
