How deep is deep are your pockets Question

The usual route is rims, these can be built from your original hubs, you need to measure the distance across the swinging arm for tyre clearance.
Front caliper and disc, spacers, lines, source mudgard. etc

There is no easy route to build one, imho it would be far better to sell it and but one already done (far cheaper)

Why do you want a 'supermoto'?
If it's the better brakes, then improve them, if you want to touch the pegs down, get sticky road tyres and wheels.
If it's the style you like, then go for what ever you like the look off Smile.

Personally, I'd find a pre-converted one in most cases, unless you've already got lots of bits yourself.
I am actually tempted to tart my CRM up sometime, but I have spare hubs, calipers, etc so won't need much money or work to do.

But why, is it you want a particular performance aim, or is it mostly a cosmetic exercise?

I've always wanted to make my KMX200 into a supermoto, as i don't think there is any kind of bike better for agressive in town/city riding, and every loon in France who is quick in the traffic seems to be mounted on a supermotard. They invented them and they must know more about what makes them so good in town than we do!

I also think that i can make my bike better than an Aprilia MX125/Husquvarna SM125 etc, and maybe even 70% as good as a sorted Yamaha TDR250 once im done!

There seems to be a bit of a resurgence in 2 stroke supermotos.
I'd definitely be tempted by a 250/300 EXC supermoto - should be very light with not too bad service intervals and lots of power. Esepecially the latest ones that have powervalves which can be configured to give different power deliveries.

From what I remember, the TDR was quite heavy, so on that front at least you should have a relative advantage in comparison.

i have a 1999 DR350 also and am looking at motarding it...

basically because i go adventure riding off road with it every couple of weeks and am getting sick of changing the tyres over every time and i usually end up popping a couple of tubes...

so i want a second set of wheels that i can put road tyres on so i can just swap over the wheels when ever i go adventure riding..

let me know if you managed to find a set of wheels compatible with your DR350...

apparently RGV250 three spoke 18/17 wheels are perfect for motard conversion..

so will be hunting down a set of these baby's.

here are some posts i found on web about it...

I just put a gs500 front wheel on my dr350 (pre 98 it bolts in , washers to space) made a bracket out of some aluminum. and all told with bike and all the parts I was under $1000 (paid $600 for the bike) that was with new rubber. It will do 70 just fine. But not as good as the 650 will do. I was on a budget so I had to go with what I got. Pod filter. self rejet. sport demon tires. bicycle speedo. Only thing I have left to do is get a 17 rear rim and mount it up as the 18 inch sport demon makes it look funny. I will wait till I wear the demon out before doing that. It is a blast in the mountains. Wish I could have afforded $5k so I could have goten a dr650 or xr650l to convert. But it is fun. I got an extra set of rims on ebay to have dirt tires too so I can switch back and for in about an hour. They cost about 50 bucks. I say get whichever one you can afford.... but remember the 350 does not have the aftermarket parts off the shelf like brakes and stuff to get them to 320mm. (but the gs500 rim has a 310mm on it and it stops like mad)

Hi mate i have a dr350 W 98' off road /motard if i can call it that.If you cant ride 50klms on a 350 i would give up riding. The moe conversion was easy ,i used a set of RGV 250 3 spoke wheels made a spacer 16mmm and bolted them on using the original dr axles.RGV discs work well with the original DR calipers .The front requires a bracket to reset the caliper to the 310mm RGV disc {back 20mm down 10mm and out 16mm}.The bike is i believe stock purchased second hand and goes like gut shot greyhound. The gearing when purchased was 15 /49 unfortunately it tended to wheel spin at 120klms and a top speed of 145klms plus.I now run 13/46 with a top speed of 110klms and the power and torque is slammed to the ground and yes its a handfull,i spend a lot of time looking up.The gearing i intend to use on the motard will be 15/42 top speed around 160klms.the road wheels are 17 front 18 rear running dunlop sportmax 110 and 140 and it handles far better than the 18-21 dirt combo .No suspesion mods have been done.Do yourself a favour and ride as many bikes as you can borrow ,beg test ride or hire and remember everybody is different.iI have owned 72 road and trail bikes from 1970 til now and as an old timer the DR is right up there but thats only my opinion.bike cost $2000 wheel conversion $400.The best thing is it only takes 10 minutes to convert from road to dirt.Cheers Ian The dollars are Aussie and the bikes are Aussie delivery which in most cases are different/component wise to Yankee delivery.

I know its an old thread but thought it best to post in here rather than start another

Inspired by a few photo's of others who had done similar I have started to try and get a set of GS500 wheels on a DR250
Its not been an entirely easy task and is not completed yet
(only had one trip to A&E so far as well which is pretty good innings for one of my projects)

Front is almost a bolt up affair (bar making new spacers)
I used the DR's front spindle, new spacers and have started to knock up a bracket for the front calliper

With the front wheel mounted central there is not much room on the calliper side fork leg- the floating disk buttons don't have much clearence there at all - and they also don't leave much room against the original calliper mount for a bolt for the relocaction bracket

Rear wheel wouldn't even fit in the swingarm...too wide by some distance
managed to skim a bit off the outside of the cush drive and slot the wheel in
Rear spindle is smaller diameter on the GS, so had to make new spacers and some top hat inserts to aid location in the swingarm (cheaper/quicker/easier than replacing the bearings to suit the DR spindle)
Rear disk got taken down in diameter and the rear calliper bracket had to be altered to get the calliper centered over the slightly oversize rotor
(I plugged the spindle hole in the carrier with a shrink fit chunk of alloy and remade the hole to suit with a different offset....and the GS spindle's diameter)

Needs a bit more fettling before I can test it out
(shorter chain and some more spacers for the front calliper)

Not cost much so far (wheels were £80, rear calliper bracket £10 and the rest I pretty much had laying round anyway)

Photo's of the not so supermoto should hopefully be attached

Regards
Rob

And today it rolled on its new wheels..

Spent the whole day tinkering and managed to get everything fitted

Took it for a couple of short blasts round the block
Handles very differently to when running the knobblies

Well worth the effort and looking forward to getting to know the bike all over again

Back tyre is very flat spotted and I will replace it as soon as I can afford another BT45 (though hoping I can persuade it to round off again in the meantime??....not planning on going on any motorways or anywhere remotely straight!)

Wheels seem to be pointing in the same direction, although offset slightly
Rear adjusters are a couple of notches off from each other to get the rear pointing dead ahead :-/

Rides fine and hands were taken off the bars at several speeds 20 / 30 MPH and it tracks straight

Not been very fast yet to see if its unstable in a straight line at speed

Feels ace cornering and very secure/sure footed and light

MOT supposed to be tomorrow but need to fix the horn and want to put a dash on it so it will have to wait till mid week now Sad

Pics...

Will take some more of the spacers /top hats I made and the brake hanger mod when I take the wheels off next

Need to get the front brake hanger re-made in stainless or alloy as I only had mild steel which will rust overnight I guess

Regards
Rob
