With a support crew, massive set of spares and tools, a direct line to BMW UK, and the help of trains, trucks and swapping one for a Russki POS to get them across Mongolia.
But it certainly was great marketing for BMW, since all anyone remembers is that Ewan and thingy made it.
Yahama will indeed have a tough job selling against that. Presumably they think there's a market for mid-life-crisis-man who really wants the GS but has some sort of inverse-snobbery deal going on. Like "Oh, sure, anyone can get round the world on a BMW, even those clampets Ewan and thingy did it, but for real adventure riding, you have to go a bit off piste, so to speak." I'd do it on my Firestorm but when I reach places where the petrol stations are more than 100 miles apart I'd be screwed. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

Yamaha have 9 Paris Dakar wins, (12 if you include quads), BMW have 6! Make of that what you will.
AFAIC the beemers are just the latest "must have" fad and the majority appear to be the, two wheeled, equivalent of the "Chelsea Tractor", ie polished at the weekend and never likely to see any mud or gravel. ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

True enough, but how many of them are actually made in Japan any more?
It sounds weird, but a BMW G650GS can be had for less than even a Hyosung 650, and is likely the cheapest Big Boy Bike to own as well when you factor in the fuel economy and low depreciation.

I'm minded to believe it, but do you have a source? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
