Ever wondered about the town you live in and how its grown ??
I found this tonight while researching my towns past

it shows aerial pictures from circa 1999 and how it looked in the 1940's
I was shocked to see how the town I live in has expanded and just how its turned from a
few streets to a large town and the amount of houses that have been built
and how the town has developed in the last 70 years

go here clicky
on the right hand side enter your post code (or anywhere you want to view)
when the map comes up click on the tab on the top left of the map for 1940 - 47 to see what it looked like back then
you may need to zoom out (size blocks just above the pic) to get it to work

you can also drag the view box about to see a wider area than your initial search area

keeping my amused for hours Laughing

Oh you don't have to pay for preview maps, just if you want to save them
(well from what I've seen so far)

enjoy your past (if your old enough to remember the 40's)

My house was built around 1850, so it on that map! Smile

Amazing to see all the fields surrounding too.

Only shows 2003 for my area on map. Shame that as the gardens back then looked fantastic would have liked to have seen it from above.

Edit how are you all doing yours it asks me to pay?

not sure what your doing wrong

enter your post code on the first page (maps 1)
you should go to a map of your area (maps 2)
then use the tags to show the old pic's from the 40's

to get the 40's map I had to zoom out one block on the size bar
but not getting asked to pay anything

Wow - Interesting stuff! Wish they had a 1960's tab too though. That'd be interesting around this area.

I was reading Endurance:Shackleton'S Incredible Voyage.

Desperate Plug/Spam Laughing

I read the book at work and wanted my own copy.

The book references loads of places which were not clear enough (for me) in the limited sketch in the book covers so I looked for the same places on Google Earth.
One of the places was the Whaling port they went to and the images of the Glaciers near the port. If you use the slider you can see how much the ice moves back.
Just as that upstart David Attenborough was rattling on about last week in Frozen Planet.

Very interesting - thanks for that!

My row of houses were the first to be built in our road - about 1910. My father-in-law has a postcard of when it was just a field full of cows Very Happy

Interesting, but like others, my neck of the woods can't have been flown over by a plane with a camera before 1991...

I did find some interesting stuff on here though:

My current address is relatively new, so only shows up as open fields in the '47 picture
...and the coal mining area that I grew up has a longer history, but the older pics weren't available Crying or Very sad

Still it's a good find, and very interesting to see development of various areas Thumbs Up

Hi

Nothing that old round here. We have found an off line photo from around the time this house was being built. Couple of farms and a few houses, but not much.

I have some scanned aerial photos from the early 1940s from where we lived in Ireland. Taken by a local guy who was a photo reconnaissance Spitfire pilot and who managed to wangle a weekend back in Ulster as a training exercise.

All the best

Keith
