Hey. Im doing my test sometime next year and just wondering what bike to start with. Wanna go to something 400/500 size but what should i get?

Recommend me some good ones! Smile

You shouldn't worry about the engine capacity - consider if it's going to be restricted, desired peak power etc.

Worry about the licence. Get that in the next twelve months, you can be on any bike you like in three years time. DONT get it in the next twelve months and you could be looking forward to no more than a 14.5bhp 125 for the next seven years!

Pass, though, and with 33bhp restrict on you for two years; I THINK, I would ride out a chunk on 125, see what actually happens to bike prices in the 33bhp catagory after Jan 2013. 125's will hold value as that will be ALL most can ride.

Current 33bhp bikes will probably fall a bit in value, as there will be fewer people qualified to ride them hence wanting them. Likely to mean lots of bargain 500 twins around, but same time, likely that they market will be crashing even further until every-one 'on' two year 33bhp restrict has ridden it out, and we start seeing the few odd folk percevering with the A2.

I think, given that; I'd be tempted to ride out the restriction on 125 until insurance was due, then look for a REALLY cheap 33bhp complient commuter, to ride out the rest; something like an MZ250; that isn't going to loose much if any value if it survives till restriction lapses; ought to cost peanuts to run, and let me save up, so that when restriction lapsed I could 'treat' myself to something 'nice' that didn't need anything stuffed in it's intakes.

The current 33bhp 'favourites' the 500 twins, not that popular with DAS newbies, although they will still be A2 candidates, with less of them coming up, are going to be less desirable, and you are likely to be able to get a very nice full-power example for pretty sensible money, towards tail of your restriction period.

With the new licence laws pushing more to DAS, though, I suspect that the ever popular 600 class is going to get even more lammered on insurance by DAS newbies than it is now; so if you REALLY want a 'big-bike' post restriction, then a 750 is likely to drop in an insurance 'hole', and more 'sensible' 750+ bikes likely to be where you can snag a real bargain.

BUT; its all in the air. the sensible starting place is still a Commuter twin; GPz,500S, ER5, CG500, SV650, or CB500.

It's just a case of how the 3rd Directive will effect the market when it kicks in. So strategically; may be best not not invest to much in anything 'seriouse' until things have settled a bit, and see how it goes.

BUT, all hinges on getting that licence in the 1st place!

Just gonna have lessons as soon as i can (17 on Feb 22nd) and then i'll start saving for a decent bike Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I hear Fretgrinder loves his Hornet and would also highly recommend a Hornet, I hear he tried to make sweet incestuous love to it and successfully did, the love child will be awful, no one has the heart to tell him as he is so excited about his Hornet.

Check if you're missing the new licence law thing being passed, but get test done, worry about bike after CC means little, I wanted a 400 to start with, then a 600, ended up with a 750, really you need to be looking at good everyday bike that is easily restricted.
