A friend on his speedfight 50 lacks a gasket for the tranny housing and he says water gets in and makes it a bitch to start/ride.

The pipe running to the airbox would be a big problem if your using this cardboard bodge. If any water gets into the mixture its really gonna mess up and give the symptoms youve described. Get a proper covered airbox and piping to feed to the carb. I had a foam filter on my RS50 and in the wet it gave similar symptoms except it would only stall on idle, but then again the positioning of the airbox on yours in the wet is far worse than the RS.

In short, get a proper feed to go from the airbox to the carb.

yeah airbox > carb > manifold > bottom end

Solution is still to replace that piping with the proper tubing Razz

Wouldn't be carb issues as you said it only happens when it rains Razz

they shouldn't be much to pick up, speedfights are common as anything so ring up some breakers or check on ebay Smile

oh thats your problem, its a flourescent green monster rep! Wink

jokes aside, its not water getting into your air filter, its water getting into your carb. That would cause it to splutter/bog/backfire and would explain how its fine for the first 5 minutes, give or take, then cuts out.

if you wanna keep the cardboard bodge be my guest jus dont ask for a solution to a problem when you've already been told the answer

the seal around the carb to the airfilter is pretty much fine

the seal might be fine but what about the cardboard tubing?

n if you still really beleive that the bodge job isnt the problem, check n fit a new gasket to the tranny.

The carb bodge may be the problem but it's unlikely, if it is the problem when you remove the air filter it will be damp.

The problem is most likely to be the spark plug getting wet, as it's directly infront of the rear wheel. From new they come with a plastic cover but this often falls out. You need to make some sort of rear mudguard to protect the spark plug from water. I used bike innertubes, but you could use lexan sheeting etc.

have you lost the flap that fits in front of the back wheel that stops water going over the top end?

the bodge isnt the problem its a short term solution it goes from the airbox to under the fairing its only use is to stop rain getting into the hole were the air goes into the air filter ill have a look witht he spark plug when i can it seems possible but i dont see how this would cause the bike to bog and die

It's a common problem on peugeot scooters i beleive the water stops the spark so there's more fuel to burn.

it is a common problem with the speedfights yes, most of the time it is the spark plug getting wet as it sits on top of the cil-head facing the wheel or its the wires under the fly wheel on the right side of the engine getting wet from the spray

but if theres no flap to protect the sparky from water you can make a flap from a old welly boot, and screw it on the end of the under tray between the sparky n wheel

for the electrics, use some vaseline or pertroliom jelly on every electrical conections you can see and get to
