Hello there! Well, I passed my mod 1 and 2 yesterday and I'm looking at my first bike. I’ve had a dilemma of head v heart, and well by the title I'm sure you can guess which won. Anyway, after looking around I have come across these 2 bikes and was wondering which you thought would be best to go for and any advice when buying.

1) - Dealer - https://www.metropolismotorcycles.com/used-bikes/details/make-triumph/model-street%20triple/9885/

5500 miles, originally bought from metropolis. It has had 3 owners, who all bought from, then px back to metropolis. FSH. 12 months MOT. 6 months parts and labour. New front tyre. Been to see it, had a good look round, no obvious signs of damage.

EXTRAS – R&G crash protectors / fly screen / engine case covers / Datatool alarm and immobiliser

PRICE - £5100 (originally £5300 with 3 months P&L)

2) – Private - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRIUMPH-STREET-TRIPLE-2009-MODEL-2026-MILES-BLACK-/200686933174?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item2eb9df94b6

2024 miles. 2 owners. Partial service history (carried out oil filter change himself, has receipts). I have not seen this bike, but will see it tomorrow. Although he has not updated the listing, he has the v5 back with the new registration.

EXTRAS - Custom made carbon underseat exhausts by Trident c/w removable baffles (originals provided), Datatool alarm and immobiliser, Triumph screen, belly pan, genuine Triumph Street Triple R handlebars, asv unbreakable levers in gold, gold top yoke nut, tail tidy, mini indicators and tank protector.

PRICE - £4850 (list)

So, what can I expect to get the dealer down to? Any extras thrown in? Didn’t really push that hard as I wasn’t going to buy today. What about the private, what could/should I get him down to? Talked to him a couple of times but not discussed price.

I live in London but are going back to the NE for Christmas. The dealer is in London and the Private back in the NE. Its an expensive round trip if I don’t take it at the time then decide to go back for it.

Thanks

Unless someone has personal knowledge to the contrary, I wouldn't wipe my arse with a service history, MOT or warranty from any dealer. Reviews aren't too hot either, even by dealer standards.

That said, it's not much more than the private bike, so it may be worth a punt, just don't expect the dealer premium to actually buy you anything.

On the dealer reviews alone, I would not buy from them.

Be fussy and picky, take your time, there are loads of bikes out there and waiting for the 'peach' is well worth it.

Good Luck.

I'd prolly offer £4500 on the private one Thumbs Up I've recently bought a STriple (also first big bike) I did buy fom a dealer but it was the nicest I had seen, with a nice spec and cheapest Mr. Green I paid £4150 but was older (57). I'd happily buy private though and the one you listed does look pretty good.

The private has a bit of a tail-tidy operation going on...
Less hassle when you fancy getting rid of the stupid growths they put on for number plate/indicator mounts.

you will not regret it! you will get used to the power reasonably quickly and the easiest bike to handle I’ve ridded. (admittedly only a cb125, er5 and a quick blast on a cbr600, but you'll be in a similar situation if just learning)

Can you reeeeeeally justify £5000 or there abouts?
I mean, maybe you can, but me... Well i'd rather pick up something for £1000/£2000 and then spend a bit here and there making it "mine".
Obviously it's personal preference, but for a first big bike i'd go for something that I wouldn't be so pissed off about smashing up.

You’re right, I think it is down to personal preference. I was all for getting an oldish sv650s and tootling around on that for a while. However, without getting into a jeremy kyle moment I haven’t had an easy year (or in fact an easy 10 years). Biking has meant more to me than simply getting on two wheels to go fast and skip traffic. I'm not made of money but I didn’t have to borrow to buy. And dam right I’ll be devastated if/when I drop it for the first time. But the bike puts an ear to ear smile on my face every time I think about it, look at it, sit on it.

When it came down to it, it was a head Vs heart moment. I’ve never looked back and thought this is the wrong thing to do. After reading around reviews and forums about it I didn’t want to resent sitting on something else when I knew I could afford the triple. You’re financial situation is your own, for me it was the right choice.

I guess i've had my own (watered down) experience of this I spose.
My transition from a 50cc Scoot to something a tad bigger had a whole whirlwind of shite from my parents mostly.
I was after a CBR125, but the parents were all like: "Justify your need for one and why cant you go for a Honda Lead 100 or a cheap scoot blah blah blah"
Basically they thought that budgeting £1k on a CBR was miles too high and I should be more financially aware of my purchases blah blah. Got real hard on my case.
But I told them to suck it, i'm getting what I want. (After all I was 18)
And at the end of the day the CBR was farrrr more ideal than some shitty Lead commuter scooter.
And that was definately a heart vs head/ form vs function kinda decision but I wasnt really after function at all Razz
