We, the missiles of the automobile world, are all very different people. Yet, there is something which draws us all together (our bikes, perhaps Laughing ).

But why is it that we choose to be bikers? Is it the thrill?? Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Or the joy of the ride??? Very Happy Very Happy

Or the sheer stupidity of it??? Confused Confused

NB: I, PERSONALLY, DO NOT THINK BIKING IS STUPID Wink

Or perhaps the fuel economy????

What do you think Question

Probably just because it's fun, alot of people here also seem to be adrenaline junkies as well I reckon Wink

However I think there is a difference between bikers and motorcyclists, some people on here seem a little obsessed Razz

Oh and I doubt it is the fuel economy factor Laughing

It's faster than walking and cheaper than parking a car. Thumbs Up

Just happens to be rather good fun as well. Smile

No we're not in the automobile world.

We are in the Auto Cycle world or Motorcycle. Or bikes!

I ride bikes because they are much more fun and interesting than cars. I think a lot of us are oriented towards performance and cars just don't cut it.

The latest VW golf GTi for example has twice the power of the original Golf GTi. It also weighs twice as much. You would never get this with a new model of bike! I don't want a TV in the headrest of my car, nor air-con or sat-nav. I want to be able to have fun driving! Compared to bikes they are staid and boring.

so I ride instead.

There is also the cameraderie aspect of it, nearly all of my friends ride or have ridden at one time or another. Without bikes I'd have no friends! Wink

Also there is an aspect of rebellion involved. Whether it be the Marlon Brando type rebellion, or just the "My parents said no, but I'm a grown up so I'll do what I like!".

Also inescapably bikes are undoubtedly cool. Harleys to Hondas, MV's to MZ's, a third class ride is better than a first class walk. And any ride is cooler than a walk, drive or bus/train ride.

Scooters don't count as bikes in terms of cool IMVHO

Basically, biking rocks! Very Happy

{edit} For me there is also a mildly nerdy aspect in that I am fascinated by the engineering and technology of bikes, whereas cars are somehow dull! Smile {edit}

I share a similar fascination with bikes as well, and will hopefully get into the whole biking scene when I have some cash Wink However I have always had a rather soft spot for mini's, don't think that will ever die or be overshadowed by bikes, however apart from that I am not really interested in cars at all, infact I find driving a chore and I haven't even got my license yet Confused

I'm afraid it isn't an anti-car thing with me. I'm happiest having the choice between the two... in an ideal world I'd have a silly sports car too, but I can't afford one. Sad

Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly anti-car, but for fun impractical purposes (which most non bikers seem to use their cars for anyway) they win hands down. Oh and they also win on one person commuting - unless its icy.

My commute from my old place in West London to my work was 5 minutes faster by car, door to door. Razz

Well If I were to come to work by car...

The last time my Dad gave me a lift to work when my bike was in for a service it took us an hour to get there, and that was without parking. Parking would cost an extortionate amount in Reading and would also take ages. Plus the bike parking is two minutes walk from my office rather than ten minutes from the nearest car park.

On a bad day it takes me twenty five minutes to get here, and quarter of an hour on a good day! Quite a difference eh? Smile

Bikes certainly do save time! Takes me about 5 minutes to get to work but closer to half an hour by car 'cos of the silly traffic.

I don't quite get how Bendy's managed 5mins faster by car though............... Confused

As in Central London you needs lots of chains, disk locks, alarms, covers.

Plus you wanna let bikes warm up. And you need to put boots, jacket & helmet on, then off again at the other end. As opposed to just jump in car, and then out at the other.

By the time you've kitted up etc you lose any potential speed saving for me getting to work compared to using the car.

My bike is just for fun as I can't afford a very fast sports car, so I'm a biker to satisfy my need of cheating death.

Cheaper than a car
Good fun
Quicker

Sometimes I wouldn't mind a car though, save me getting a soaking.

Bingo.

I could roll out of bed, stick any old clothes on and get straight into the car. No traffic to speak of between my house and work as everything was always going the other way, so no filtering advantage to be gained. Only a 10-15 minute trip anyway, so the 5 minutes not spent unchaining the swine was a significant saving. And that's before we get into helmets and gloves and other faffing.

Commute from my new place will be faster by bike, no doubts there, but I also quite enjoy just trolling along in the car with some tunes on. Like I said before, it's good to have the choice. Thumbs Up

Hmmm. I was a biker because I could have wheels at 16. Then I was a biker becasue it was fun, and the cost of car stuff at 17 was totally out of the question.

Now.. I have a bike as a toy, but I do all my mileage in the car. Commuting 35 miles round trip, in all weathers, at any time between 6am and 10pm, on country roads with no traffic. Car is just as quick as bike, and quicker when it is inclement.

Bike is more fun, but car is still fun.

It calms me down, like skating for me. Lately I've been having very bad times, but when I straddle that lump of metal and turn the ignition, it all goes away. All I think is where to hit that next corner, or when is it going to be clear so I can pass and hmm, isn't she fit. Its escapism for me.

Thats part of the enjoyment for me,

When I'm driving a car down some sweet twisty roads I often think to myself: "Whoah this is fun!" but this is always followed by "I wish I was on my bike!!"

This kinda spoils the fun of the car for me! Smile
