You need:
Domain name
Hosting
Content management software.
A page design.

To get a decent result you'll need a web design & development company and be paying £500+. You can of course do it yourself using a free page template as a starting point. There are free CMS out there like wordpress and free e-commerce systems like magento. though they really have tried their best to make it as simple as possible to set up and use the fact remains that it's complicated, time consuming and the end result will look amateur.

Maybe set up a web page, but sell the products themselves via ebay?

If you don't know what you're doing, then do that Thumbs Up

As a customer, I feel much more confident buying through eBay when I come across an unknown website or a website that looks unprofessional. I don't like parting with my card details anyway.

If you do have sales through your own website then you need to get an SSL certificate too. No SSL = no sale to me.

It's also the hassle of finding my wallet and entering in card details and postage info for a new site. It's not so bad if it's say Amazon and i know i'll be buying from there again, but for a 1 off purchase I'm against the effort and against someone new having my card details. With ebay you just use your existing paypal account, which is something you can take as a payment method on an online shop. But as said above setting that up requires either experience or a technical disposition.

I would advise setting up on ebay to start. The market place is already there and you have millions of people searching for your products to buy.

If you have a website, nobody is going to find it for months on end until search engines start indexing it and that's providing you've even picked the right keywords and how competitive they are.

Best practice would be to establish yourself on ebay either just selling as one off auctions or set up a store/shop. Then you can setup a website and start tying in the site into your ebay store and start driving ebay traffic to your site.

That's an idea actually.

You could create an eBay store and decide on a store name. Then you buy a domain name and just re-direct that to your eBay store.

That way you can advertise your website, and it'll take people to your eBay page. If you ever get successful enough, everyone already knows your website address. Thumbs Up

Go to your library and have a flick through books like 'Websites for Dummies' 'PHP for Dummies' etc. That'll give you some idea what's involved.

It would be better to piggy-back an already fully marketed product, surely...than starting out alone??

Check around the 'net for items that you plan to sell...such as Amazon or eBay (which has already been suggested), or on Gumtree or FridayAds. Thumbs Up
