Whats with all the grit?

If you want a great lacquer that also happens to be petrol resistant, buy some 2k clearcoat (its a duel compound and its pretty awesome)

Just be aware that some paints can cause plastic to weaken. You'll find out if there was a problem when you bounce it off the floor.

Just a cheap aerosol can... plus the temperature outside probably didn't help .. No idea other than that, there is next to no wind etc.

Yeah I heard that a few times before Razz But the helmet is pretty battered with paint chips etc so rather than just scrapping it, Paint it and see if that works.... if it breaks with some pressure applied I know not to use it Wink

Hard to say from the photo but it may be moisture or oil contamination.

Possibly moisture from the atmosphere then, I rubbed the helmet down after sanding the clear coat off the top of the plastic and left it for a few days to make sure that it didn't knacker the plastic with the cleaner I used

Yeah, thats a pretty good way of testing if a helmet will still save your head at 70mph.

Why didn't I think of that?!

Tell you what, I sprayed my zzr outside, in 6 degree temperature, a week before the snow set in. Here's how it looked.

You gotta do the most to keep it grit free, I went by the side of my house down the driveway and I was okay. Granted, rain ruined my lacquer the first time round, So second time I covered it after 3 hrs of touch dry, covered it for four days, then I sat it in a shed with fan heater at 20deg for 12 hours.

Thumbs Up

took about an hour to sand off the lacquer... then another 5 mins to rub it down and left it for a few days.
Took a while to mask off the vents and the bottom skirt..thing but still managed to miss a few bits due to the aerosol not spraying properly while aiming it upwards, I wasn't expecting a perfect quality finish and I don't particularly care that it isn't perfect Razz

The speckles aren't that noticeable the camera flash make them stand out a bit more... You can notice it in natural light but not as much.

Only managed to give it 2 coats from the rattle can I got, if I had more paint and some fine sand paper I could do a much better job...

This was more of an experiment to check if the helmet would accept being painted with the cheap spraypaint from Poundland.
It seems to have dried now and the plastic doesn't seem to have gone brittle, gave it a bit of a squeeze and a knock here and there with my hand... No cracking... Seems like it will be safe to use

You must be mad to use that after you have sprayed solvent over it, you have no idea how its affected the structure of the material.

As long as it's gone over the original paint i don't think it'll make a difference.

If you used paint from poundland then I will 100% guarantee you it will come off. I got some poundland paint to paint some poundland guns for a fancy dress outfit. The paint didn't last 5 mins so I went out and spent £3.50 on a very small tin of fairly decent spray paint. Even that came off eventually.

It’s not normally the quality of the paint that makes it flake it the poor prep work that goes into it.

Well I used the lid today in .. pretty cold weather and tonight in even colder weather where moisture just saps onto everything from the air.

No cracking or chips.. Helmet still seem structurally sound.

Considering the helmet is basically 3 layers, the outershell is just plastic with an airgap being the second layer between that and the protective layer.

I see no negative effects from painting it... so as far as I'm concerned it's safe enough to use Rolling Eyes
