Hi all..
I have only been biking now about 6mnths and have been given all sorts of advice.Ranging from the good to the bad Very Happy .But these are the ones which will stick with me. Very Happy

1) always expect the unexpected

2)Practice forward planning

3) Always give the bike a check over before going for a ride.tire pressures .tires chain lights etc

4)Ride within your means .Don't play catch up

5)Don't forget your obs ever.

So what was your best advice given since you have been riding..

Be safe sw Very Happy Thumbs Up

To corner well, squeeze your heels against your heal plates. Makes you feel more part of the bike rather than on top of it.

A mis-quote, original attributed to Rossi when someone asked him how they could ride quicker:

Brake later. Corner faster. Get on the power earlier.

Keep your head up through the corners, looking well down the road through the corner and aim for the horizon.

that was told to me by my adv instructor when i started granny riding round corners.

On a serious note, "look at the road and whats coming and not at the bike and what`s passed"

Take corners in a gear that puts you midway in your usable rev range; if you have to lose/gain speed at any point you do it all with your right hand, and not on the brakes/changing gear.

If you can't stop within the available distance you can see, you're going to fast/riding too close.

You are invisible. Those who can see you are trying to kill you.

Needing to switch to reserve halfway through an enthusiastic overtake is not the time to learn where your fuel tap is or which direction it needs to go. Learn to find it on a straight and quiet road.

Fuel gauges lie. Use your trip meter to find out how far you can go on average before needing reserve. Fill up before you hit this number.

If you don't have a kickstart, learn the technique of bump starting your bike whilst it's healthy. Trying to figure out how to do it for the first time when both you and your bike are cold, wet, and tired isn't going to go well. Even if you have a kickstart, learn how to bump start anyway.

Always have a mobile phone & AA/RAC card.

If you do you will never need them, if you don't your bike will die on the coldest wetest night of the year in the middle of Dartmoor.

The best bit of advice I ever read was a sign up behind the bar at the Cat & Fiddle pub, it read simply:

If you ride like a knob you'll die.

Thumbs Up

The speed my bike is capable of taking a bend in the road will usually be greater than my skill at taking that bend.

When you find yourself in a sticky situation which may or may not be of you own making.... Look where you want to go and find the gap...

for instance if someone pulls out infront of you, yes a bit of brake but also look for the safe place to go which may be swerve past in front or behind...

And remember unless you are good and I mean very good the bike is much better than you, so don't pannic if you think you aren't going to make a bend, lean over more and look where you want to go...chances are you'll sail round and after you change your pants will have a better idea of what the bikes capable of.

Can't help thinking that while you did 'get away with it', that perhaps your advice doesn't work in all situations!

Keep your back straight.
Keep your heels down.
Don't let the reins sag and keep a little bit of contact on the bit.
Look where you are going.
If your ride is allowed to shit/piss whilst on a hack lean forwards slightly to ease your body weight of his/her back.
If he/she ever refuses a jump do not let him/her out of at least jumping something easier.
If you get thrown off get up and get back on it.

Keep a couple of Polo Mints/Life Savers in your pocket for special treats.
