I definately wouldn't advise it, but I suppose you could ride a motorway without the relevant licence, but you can expect to have the book thrown at you if you got caught, and/or involved in an accident...
I checked a few sites, and the concensus seems to be 3-6 points, up to £1000 fine, a discretionary disqualification
Offence code LC20 - Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence £1,000 Discretionary disqualification 3-6 points

no that babys still in the shed, picking up a new bike 94 rg 125.
although with the past weeks experiences thats not a dead cert
its not really worth it for the sake of extra 10 miles to go round, but was unclear as to what might happen if i did try it. ____________________ i dumped my girlfriend the other day! she wouldnt act out one of my fantasy's. all i wanted her to do was come home from work, catch me fucking her sister and join in!!! miserable bitch!

In addition to all that has been said, the highway code usually does state the laws:
| https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069862 wrote: | Prohibited vehicles. Motorways MUST NOT be used by pedestrians or holders of provisional motorcycle or car licences. Motorcycles under 50 cc, cyclists, horse riders, certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission) also MUST NOT use motorways. Agricultural vehicles and powered wheelchairs/powered mobility scooters (see Rules 36-46 incl) are also banned from motorways.
[Laws HA 1980 sects 16, 17 & sch 4, MT(E&W)R regs 3(d), 4 & 11, MT(E&W)(A)R, R(S)A sects 7, 8 & sch 3, RTRA sects 17(2) & (3), & MT(S)R reg 10] |
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/
Edit:
I don't really see why you would want to try it on a 125 though. I've taken my 125 on the motorway once and I hated it to bits - I make an extra effect to avoid motorways wherever I go now until I get a slightly bigger bike ____________________ 2004 R1 & 2018 XSR900 |

silly fucking law i think as you cant learn to ride/drive on one but as soon as you pass your qualified?! horse shit
the only way to learn is experience. |
You don't need to "learn" to ride on a motorway. It is just a dual carriageway with one extra overtaking lane {correction} with blue signs instead of green; no parking places; and a rule that says no stopping, no pedestrians, no mopeds, no horses, and no learners (Doesn't HAVE to have three lanes in either direction, or a hard shoulder. Many motorways have only two driving lanes in either direction. While a duel carriageway merely means that the traffic in opposite directions, has a median divider of some sort, rather than just a white line; some duel carriageways only have one lane in either direction). Not rocket science.
Learners should be banned from motorways anyway, if nothing else its an extra incentive for people not to endlessly ride round on L plates. |
{almost} Exactly!
Absolutely nothing stopping you from riding whatever you want; wherever you want whenever you want... BUT your lack of licence to do so legally.
Be grateful for the privileged of actually being allowed to ride unsupervised before passing tests, like any other motorised road user, rather than resentful of the restrictions & limitations which are almost entirely self imposed, because the only thing stopping you passing tests, getting the licence and not having them is your own determination!
If you can afford a bike; you can afford a licence. There are no excuses. So if you choose to live with the limitations & restrictions, inconvenience & ignomy of L-Plates... that is entirely down to you. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I took my old 125cc on a couple of 60mile motorway trips (with my full license) and didnt seem to have any scary moments. I did have to sit behind some slow moving lorries whilst going up hill, but with some carefully planned over takes I was fine.
The only thing I didnt like about it was keeping the engine running at full power for over an hour, thing was screaming ____________________ Current Ride: Daytona 600 |

I have used 125's on motorways. I used to really enjoy Manchester to Plymouth, as an impoverished student, on half a tank of petrol, slip streaming the trucks!
Its how you view them, and try and use them. My early motorway miles were slogging up and down the M5/M6 in an old Dodge seven and a half tonner dragging a ruddy plant trailer, with a governor set at 50mph.
Not ALL traffic on the motorway blasts along at 80+, and I dont mind sitting back, and cruising at a steady 56 even in the car, or particularly in the Range-Rover, enjoying the ecconomy and lack of stress.
No, a 125 doesn't give you the speed to 'cut it' with the rep-mobiles vying for slots in the two outside over taking lanes.... so DONT TRY!
Most 125's do have the oomph to cruise happily in the 'truck lane' and have the reserve to maintain it up hills or to put on that bit extra to get past some grossly laden HGV.
I agree its not thier ideal habbitat, and would question why you would really want to use a 'boring' motorway, when you can have a lot more fun and a lot more interesting ride taking the scenic route...
But I ride for pleasure, so dont generally ever have to be anywhere inparticular at any particular time.
I do see people quite regularly using the M6, M5 & M42 round Birmingham on smaller bikes and even scooters as part of thier daily commute, and they are having a ball when traffic hits the frequent snarl ups.
Even come accross a few Scooter-Rallyists trundling up the motorway, two up, laden with luggage on thier way to a Northern-Soul gig in their parka's or whatever it is they go do....
They dont cause any more of a problem than any other 'irregular' vehicle on the motorway and are probably less of a hazard and at less risk that someone in an old swaying Series Land-Rover with wheeja-board worm and sector steering, or the inevitable numpties in over size motorhomes that have no idea how big or wide thier bus is, and dont realise that HGV regulations apply to them and they cant drive it like thier everyday mondeo, or the borrowed caravan towers; that think they can tow at 80mph, the van swaying all over the place, or dont trust themselves to go over 40.
Bottom line, is, its not the vehicle, its the driver, and their CHOICE whether they are comfortable to use it on the motorway and within the limitations of the vehicle & thier capability.
Trying to battle white-van man, in his 90mph turbo-diesel transit, on a barely 70mph Yamaha YBR125, like you might in a 5-series, and finding it rather 'scary' ought to be bludy obviouse, and is NOT the fault of the bike or the motorway regulations! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

*facepalm*
Why are (most) women such sissies when it comes to the motorway?
OH NO DEY ARRR GOINN FASTTT
That's the point hurrr
My mum is the same, shits herself on the motorway, I really don't get it, it's safer than these pitch black country roads with boy racers doing 80 down them because they think noone is around, at least everyone on the motorway is going a constant speed - Unless someone fucks up ____________________ Fzr-600 1999 |

I agree with it, a qualified instructor ought to know when a pupil is ready to gain some motorway experience. Better that than having to go on with no experience at all, as newly qualified drivers have to do now. Mrs D has only been on a motorway once, (and that was the M606 for approx 500 yds) I was with her and she was bloody terrified even though there was nothing else about.
I've been on a motorway on a 125 though, and I wouldn't want to repeat that experience in a hurry (I got knocked off it on the sliproad)
Dog
p.s.
I've been on a motorway as a learner too, in HGV and in a bus. ____________________ I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realise that what you heard is not exactly what I meant |
