Hi guys,
on your module 2 test do you have to select neutral when waiting at lights? or is it ok to leave it in gear with clutch in?
thanks Smile

No, you can leave it in gear, I did all the time as the bike I did my test on was well worn and finding neutral could take a while...

Might be different when you come to a 'Stop' sign - you must at least come to a dead stop an put a foot down, even if you can see that it's clear to go.

The only time my bike ever sees neutral is when it's parked. On test I left it in gear one with the clutch pulled in. Right foot pressing the rear-brake and the left foot on the floor.

Occasionally check your mirrors whilst waiting - can't do any harm. Remember your mirror checks/shoulder checks before moving off from the lights. Smile

I did the same on my driving test.

Thumbs Up

Can't see any harm in it. I'd be surprised if the examiner would be able to tell whether it was in neutral or not anyway, unless you were waving your left hand in the air

I wouldn't. While you're messing around changing gear you aren't covering your rear brake and you're hopping from foot to foot. A tight examiner may think you're not in proper control. Should be left foot down, right foot on brake.
Also, what if it won't go back into first easily? You get to panic, then remember to let the clutch out a bit and try again and hopefully you won't have stalled letting the clutch go a bit and hopefully it'll go that time - but it might not - and then you're not making progress and affecting other road users.
I wouldn't bother mate Thumbs Up

I heard that in the Before Time, in the Long Long Ago, that because Plod riders were taught to do the neutral jig that DSA examiner (all wannabe coppers, amirite?) expected it too.

But that may have been apocryphal and it's not the Before Time any more. I passed with leaving it in 1st much of the time, although I think I did put it in neutral a couple of times and then ostentatiously used my left hand to wipe the sleet off of my visor or take a swig from my hip flask just to cover my bases.

I was told no neutral as you should be prepared to get yourself out of danger should it arise while you were at a set of lights. I definitely didn't go into neutral on my tests and it was never mentioned.

That's what my instructor told me prior to my test as well
