I went to a job interview today and the interviewer was drinking from a white mug. However, on the bottom of the mug was written "I'm a twat" in what appeared to be black permanent marker. Or it may have even been sold that way pre-printed by a joke shop. Maybe I should sell them on ebay. I think they could be popular.
This really threw me, while I was trying to concentrate on saying how ace I was. I wondered if it was on purpose to see how I'd react, but I think someone had played a prank on him, or it was a mug in general circulation that someone had played a prank with.
Quite bizarre, but pretty clever and effective if any of you are into pranks, which I'm sure you are.
The clever bit, was it was written at just the right orientation to be read while being emptied. It's those details that count, for those who intend to use this.
I'm now wondering if I should tell the guy or not.
On the one hand, he may appreciate me being candid, on the other he may be embarassed if I let him know and that might put him off hiring me.
Interview went well.
I'm currently thinking only tell him, if I don't get the job.
EDIT just found the mug in question on ebay.

it was definitely that not permanent marker as I suggested at first.

How bizarre. I think I might have struggled not to laugh and comment. While I think you might be reading too much into it, maybe it was a bit of a test to see how observant, honest and willing to take on a difficult issue you were. Then again, maybe it was just a mug, and the rest of the workforce are pissing themselves. ____________________ Responsibility. It's a difficult reality for some. I've done worse . . . a lot worse to folk in the office
What kind of job was the interview for?
It could well have been part of a psychometric test & IMO you would have done well to at least broach the subject with him.
But then again, maybe someone in the office thinks he's a twat.
I'm leaning towards psychometric testing or a very, very, very informal & relaxed atmosphere to put a potential grunt at ease.
If the position being interviewed for was a serious one, then I'd consider it most unproffessional for an interviewer to be drinking from a mug ! |

Yeah, I put various smileys on the bottom of all the mugs at the last place I worked. Fortunately my bosses then had a sense of humour ____________________ 'Allo! My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!

Nice one, Col. Well done on getting the job
I actually had a slightly different but also similarly tricky situation in a job interview today.
Of the panel of 3 interviewing me, the most senior (I think) was a professor who had one of those eyes which goes all over the place. Marty Feldman-ish sorto thing, with a lazy eyelid: God, its so hard to know which one to look at, without actually asking, so I tried to be egalitarian about it and look at both (separately)
Dunno if I will get the job, maybe I looked at the wrong eye *sigh* BUT ... if I get the job I would [eventually] ask the Prof about his eye. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |
