They have paper cut-outs on all the MFDs.

Overall the thing looks about as modern and technologically sophisticated as a jukebox. ET must be in stitches. Laughing

Close to 40 years old, and so complicated that changing any core part is provides a testing nightmare.

There are rumours that they landed up going through Ebay to buy obsolete electronics to salvage components from to provide spares.

All the best

'upposed to be that older electronics are less vulnerable to 'spacy stuff' than newer integrated electronics with closer transistors. I still remember 286 CPUs being bought up for ridiculous amounts of money on ebay when the Intel p5s came about. When ebay was still .com and wasn't evil.

I believe they used a prehistoric 5.5 inch floppy disk drive on a lot of the thing and sourced replacements on Ebay.

Most space stuff is CMOS rather than TTL. Stuff has to be tested and verified as space qualified to prove it can withstand radiation, cosmic rays etc. The space industry is ultra conservative in their use of stuff which is why the mars rovers used 1 megapixel cameras and your phone has an 8megapixel camera Laughing

If anyone has more than a passing interest in the Space Shuttle, this book is well, well worth a read.

https://covers.openlibrary.org/w/id/474969-L.jpg

Takes you through the whole thing from the point of view of one of the 'new breed' at the beginning of the shuttle program, trying to integrate with all the post Apollo heroes and stuff, including all the shuttle disasters and the reasons for. It makes me some very enlightening, and entertaining reading. There is a very human touch to it.

One of my favourite space books thus far. Thumbs Up

Most planes even modern fighter jets are at least 15 years out of date by the time they come into service. It takes so long to design and test that they can't be up to the minute. I imagine space stuff will be even further behind and testing must take ages. Bottom line if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you know piece of kit X works them why take something newer that hasn't had as much testing there isn't much support up there if something goes tits up!

the 15 year old GPS in the helicopters still require cryptographic codes to be uploaded each flight just to access the satellites with any degree of accuracy. (From back in the days when only military had access to gps).

Not only that but each memory block (affectionately called "the brick") can only hold enough map data for a few hundred square miles.

Thing is your tomtom is probably more accurate and certainly a hell of a lot easier to use. Yet when compared to the MH60-R like the US use the aircraft still looks like something from tomorrows world. (by comparison)
