There should be a light on the speedo that comes on when you need a top up.

That would be the two stroke oil (though try to keep on top of that rather than relying on the oil light).

The gear box oil is checked as I said in your other post.

on the same subject !

anyone know how to test that the light is working but also how long you can run for once the light has come on without putting the bike at any risk, thing I'm going to be doing a 160 mile round trip a few days a week and wondering if the light came on say 50 miles in could I still get there and back etc.

Thanks guys and girls
Ian

Look at the actual 2 stroke oil reservoir to see how much oil is in there. When the light comes on its just tells you your getting low, not about to run out in 5 seconds which alot of people seem to think.

I've used my bike a couple of days with the oil light on but on my bike i can clearly see how much oil is in there as the oil tank is easily visible.

Just noticed this topic and wondered if anyone does know how to check the little light is working, I checked the feeds with a multimetre going into the tank and I have a good possitve and neg feed going in but just wanted to check that it will come on and the bulb is ok.
If you found a way could you let us know.

Also anyone know where the post is that talks about what the best types of oil (both) are for the NSR125 ?

Thanks Ian

You should be able to unplug something around the sensor and then play with the wires... apart from that you could just keep a bottle of 2 stroke with you and check the level every 20 miles or so to make sure it hasn't got /really/ low.

This is the post:

To summarise, must use Castrol TTS, use either 2 stroke gear box oil or a 10W40 4 stroke oil for the gearbox.

Hi all, thanks for all the info, have dropped my oil and so much beter feel from the thing.

Was just going to top up my 2 stroke as well, but was slightly confused to see the stuff I got was red, thing is the two stroke thats in there at the moment is yellow err...... have I got the wrong stuff or has somebody put the wrong one in my bike ?

didnt want to just add it in case I need to drop whats in there already, there isn't a heck of a lot in but my home made dip stick still shows a good 2 inches worth.

The oil light comes on automatically when you turn the ignition on, you should never let the 2T run down so much that the light comes on, in my experience it is usually too late and the damage is done.

Maybe mine if broken but it does not come on on mine unless it's low, but def. works as I dropped all my oil out to clean and replace it and came on with about one sixth of the full amount left.

I would disagree with this when its concerned with 2 stroke oil but agree where its to do with oil/oil pressure in the engine of say a 4 stroke damage could already of occurred.

In the 2 stroke tanks the light (if working) normally comes on when the level gets low not when its ran out. if there is still some oil in the tank its fine, its just when none is in there or none is getting into the engine that damage will occur.

Agree with Hex. The 2T oil-tank has about 200ml reserve, which will give at least 100miles with the warning light on. It would be foolish to try to second guess the reserve though
