Could don't mean shit - if you have a faulty light etc - they give you a rectification notice ... so your post is just ____________________ Jogging on, destination living. |

If the police were well-informed then they would know that no speedo is a contravention of the Construction and Use regulations, and also that a sat nav is not an appropriate speedo ( doesn't work in tunnels, dodgy under trees and in built-up areas, not a direct measurement of vehicle speed and so on).
I'd be surprised I'd they'd let you continue your journey. Not sure of the penalty though.
|
C&U does say you need a speedo, but I can't see any indication that a sat nav wouldn't qualify, unless the online version I found is missing some text. Which is possible. A sat nav is a device, it measures speed, sounds like a qualifies to me - C&U doesn't seem to mandate how the speedo has to work.
I guess the police could argue that because it's not a direct measurement of road vehicle speed and/or doesn't work in tunnels, it's not usable as a speedo. Then I guess a well motivated lawyer could argue that a traditional speedo isn't 100% reliable either - the speedo of a car on a slippery surface (or a bike whose front wheel happens to be in the air... ) isn't indicating the actual vehicle speed, either. (Sat nav would be more accurate!) It's just pretty close under most conditions.
If the police did decide to make an issue of it, you'd be making these arguments at a later date because they'd probably confiscate the bike on the spot, mind. If your goal is to avoid hassle if you get pulled, making a technical argument based on the wording of C&U isn't likely to work, because you'll have shitloads of hassle, even if you eventually win. ____________________ Bike history: YBR125 -> XJ600 |

I don't care - i know my speed - it's just something i can say i use ... as of today i/ve got a 3gs, will will be easier and cheaper to mount than the tom tom 910 i have.
WOuld want the gps up and running but would hardly ever use it as i prefer maps. Or use google maps to pin point location if lost. ____________________ Jogging on, destination living. |
