Does anyone know if these can run directly off mains electricity, or do they require extra components? These are the lamps https://www.maplin.co.uk/pls-energy-saving-lamps-98610

Thanks Karma

The plastic base bit doesn't look big enough to hold the circuitry needed to run them direct from mains, I'd expect them to require an external ballast. Normally light fittings that take those types of lamps would have the ballast built in.

If you plug them into something like https://www.screwfix.com/p/arden-eco-rectangular-18w-black-bulkheads/54892, they can run off mains electric.

The builders have fitted similar shitty fittings in my new pad (PLC 4 pin to be precise), the gubbins (ballast/Starter etc?) are housed in the light fitting itself. Utter gash, needless to say they will be coming down pronto Smile

Is it not a building control thing? - they want external lights to be capable of taking only low energy bulbs in the hope that they will save a few baby seals by stopping you fitting those very nasty incandescent light bulbs.
