Been looking for a secondhand 125 just to practice on for test for a few weeks now seem to be very rare to find a good one with my budget of <=1300gbp they all seem to be near 2000gbp +.The 125's i been looking for are the usual suggested learner ones ybr125,cg125 etc not wanting a burnt out 125 sportsbike just one that works to get experience on then sell and hopefully not lose much.Looked on autotrader, gumtree,MCN etc almost daily any good ones that appear are 100+miles away which simply ain't a option. Can anyone give me some tips on 125 hunting and maybe other places to look im near rg21 ?

Sorry, you'll just need to be patient, keep cash to hand and don't dick around when one does come up. A cheap decent bike at this time of year - in this weather - won't be available tomorrow. I'm about ready to brick my workmate in the bonce, he's missed so many bikes by prevaricating. Doh!

[UPDATE]
Oh, and ask around in meatspace. People with bikes know people with bikes. Said workmate has just this second been offered by word of mouth a mint GT125R in the fastest colour, (genuinely) looked after from new by a professional mechanic, at a "quick sale" price. Shocked

Personally I'd wait, 1300 is enough to get you a good bike if you look around and haggle a little.

If you can be patient...

Update to the update, a 2010 1800 mile GT125R appeared on Gumtree at £1600 at 9am this morning, and is already sold. Not "bloke coming to look", not "deposit down", but "gone, phone's been ringing off the hook, need to get that advert down".

Seems to be a bit of a feeding frenzy. Wink

I got a perfect condition cbr125 for £1000 last year, so you dont need to spend loads to get a bike.

I've bought 125s for as low as £130 in April 2 years back.

Keep your eyes open, drop a bid on ebay just before it ends, you might get lucky, you might not.

I was in my local bike dealers on Saturday, he said they're having real trouble getting hold of any decent used 125s, apparently European firms are coming over here and buying them up by the lorry load. Any time he does get one in it's usually sold the same day!

With respect, this isn't 1 or 2 years back. It might be different round your gaff, but Japanese/Korean 125s seem to be shifting quicker than SS outfits at a Max Mosley party.

We might need to wait for more typical UK weather to get bargains again. Wink

With me it's reaching the point where I'm going to have to buy a brand new YBR & just take the 20% depreciation hit.

I can't be bothered with the hassle of trying to buy privately, especially as I haven't got a clue what I'm looking at, and then have the reverse-hassle of entertaining tyre-kickers to get rid of the scooter.

interesting thread. Local dealer in Accy wants £1660 for an 09 plate ybr125 with 8k miles and no service history. Although price includes CBT I think it's a little steep. So prepared a list of newer or lower mileage or just plain cheaper bikes in usual places mcn, autotrader etc to bargain with. Will try to lower price or blag crash bars or flyscreen or something. Prob more chance with something that won't cost them cash like free labour on next service Smile i did think about private sale but i'm not a practical person one not too sure of what to look out for except twiste subframe lol

Hi.
Can you get comprehensive insurance on your cat d?

Even with 125 pounds knocked off for cbt it's still on the high side. Probably why it's been there a few months.

Forgot to add it comes with top box!

£1300!!!! I'm looking for one for less than £900, and that was after begrudgingly upping my budget from £500.

Think I'll end up getting a new Huoniao in a few weeks.

I have a fancy map; I have just stuck a pin in RG21 (Basingstoke) and put a 100 mile proximity circle around it.
You are trying to tell us, that there are NO £1300 YBR125's ANYWHERE in Southern England or the Midlands!
That radius covers aproximately half the area of England, and 3/4 of its population!!!!!!
Bikes wont fall into your lap, while you sit at a computer screen; you need to do a lot of net trawling and not just e-bay, Auto-trader & gumtree, but look for stuff andertised on the forums; on local interest sites. You need to get out, look in paper-shop windows; super-market message boards; get the local free-papers; 'put the word out' you are looking for a bike, to use the 'grape-vine' of freinds of freinds of family & work collegues.
You need to be patient; you need to have the cash ready & to hand, so that you can act swiftly & decicively when anything turns up.
And you need to be prepared to travel to view, and more than one or two bikes. Which may mean calling in, or earning favours for lifts.
You are hunting for a second hand bike, in the hope of getting something for HALF it's 'Retail' price.
You dont get anything for 'nothing' in this world; so if you want that 'saving' you have to suffer the inconvenience of not being able to walk into a show-room and get 'customer service'; as well as all the other stuff you get with a new bike, and be prepared to put in some effort, for the saving.

If you're half serious, I'd suggest the Lexmoto Vixen or Arrow instead, purely for the ease of getting insurance.

It is worth the wait mate.

After about 3 weeks of looking at a collection of used Aprilia's, Honda's and Yamaha's, I'm finally about to close a deal for a 2007 Honda CG, with under 7k miles and a Givi top box for £1250.

Patience is very much a virtue. Thumbs Up

Just keep doing what you're doing, if you can expand your radius to include London or your nearby city you'll be sure to find a lot more Smile (though that is easy for me to say, as I'm in West Essex!)

I was gonna suggest that. Seemingly it's one of the cheaper one out there. Plus it's from a dealer which I guess has its benefits.

Just found a cbr125 here ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-CBR-125-R-4-/320871315132?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item4ab56bb6bc

You say you want one for a few weeks just to practice on.
So you don't need to spend anywhere near £1300. Or get a newish one.
I paid £470 two weeks ago for my 1998 CG125 and it does the job.
If you can't find a half decent (and by that I mean mechanically alright, not new & pretty) 125 for under £1300 then you're doing something drastically wrong.

OK, are you buying a bike or not?

If you are, work out how much you can afford to spend, and get that in cash. Until you have that money in your hand, you're not a serious buyer.

Then go and see some bikes. They're not going to come to you, and clicking a mouse isn't getting it done.

If you see a bike that you like at a price that you like with the documentation in order, an MOT and road tax, then offer £200 less than they're asking and start haggling.

It's that easy.

I don't see why not. The fact it was cat D bears no relevance on the insurance quote, seemingly. As long as its been repaired and MOT'd I guess Thumbs Up

Seems a rip anyway, you could get a 2011 model for that much (probably less)
I didn't see much poitn going fully comp as I dont intend to claim if I fuck up, went TPFT
