Ok so I need to adjust the valve clearances on my Triumph Daytona 955i ..

Now my daytona only has a side stand & I do not posess a centre stand. Now in order to avoid the cost of purchasing a paddock stand (£100+) in order to rotate the back wheel whilst I adjust and measure the valve clearances.. I was wondering could I keep the bike on the side stand and spin the wheel using a "laser wheel spinner"

What are you thoughts guys.. Completly dumb idea.. or might just work ?

Also does anybody know a cheap place to get shims from. As they seem rather expensive for just a small disc of metal.

Buy or borrow a paddock stand. If the bike falls over whilst doing the valves you'll be in a world of pain.

You can probably turn the engine over using the nut that holds the flywheel on. I've done valves with a bike on a side stand, but then i've never owned anything too expensive to worry about wrecking

Can turn the engine over using a socket as above.

I paid £22 for my rear stand, and then someone posted after me to say the same model was available for £15. It holds my thundercat up nicely, plenty strong and stable enough.

Its a single sided swing arm - the stands are more expensive.

If anyone near Wolverhampton has a padock stand for single sided swing arm daytona 955i & a valve lifting kit.. Id be more than happy to pay a rental fee

He means the shim tool. YOu can do the shims without pulling the cams, but the tool is £55. I could make on in an hour given the dimensions, it's a very simple device.

Thats right a shim tool, and no I aint got the foggiest about what im doing

Although I do have a haynes manual and have read a few tutorials online. As with anything you want to learn in life - you have a go.

Thanks for the link stonsie, but that still puts it over £60 with delivery. Im trying to avoid that cost. Probably wont be able to but im tryin.

Im gathering all parts & tools together before I attempt the job. Im wondering where is the best place to buy shims once I work out which sizes I need ?

Also does anybody have any recomendations for a good torque wrench. It seems the nm sizes are totally random.. From 3nm - 28nm or 40nm - 220nm or 5nm - 25 nm..

its like which wrench do you go for ? Why does it seem nobody makes sets like 0nm-25nm then 25nm - 80nm and 80nm-220nm or whatever.. why are they all random.

just pull the bike over onto its sidestand until the rear wheel lifts and turn the wheel by hand that way, aslong as your stood on the same side as the stand it shouldnt go anywhere
