Just wondering if anybody has any ideas on this. BT broadband, bt homehub 2.0
The broadband connection is driving us mad. It can be fine for a few minutes then it will drop. Sometimes using the windows diagnostic stuff sorts it, others a router reset sorts it and other times we have to turn the router off for a few minutes.
We've tried two different router both do the same. 3 computers/laptops, 2 phones and 2 ps3 all drop out at the same time. We've tired it in both the sockets because we thought it was the extension but it does the same on the master.
We've rung bt when it's pratting about. They told us there's no problem with the line on their end and that it must be the router.
Is it possible to sort ourselves or do we need an engineer out?

Can't offer any *technical* help but I had a similar problem with Virgin Media when I moved into this place. It kept dropping out - like when I asked for the internet it took 5 minutes to connect, then was ok until I left it 15 minutes, by which time it seemed to have forgotten there was an internet it should have been looking at.

They fobbed me off for ages but I persevered and in the end they did a check (which appeared to involve pressing a button) and said "oh yeah, you're offline most of the time" we'll send out an engineer. Engineer did something in the green box at the end of the street along the lines of "turn the dial up" and it's been fine ever since.

So yeah, demand an engineer. Either he'll fix it or he'll tell you your modem is stuffed, in which case you feel a bit foolish but it gets fixed anyway.

Is it your connection to the router that's dropping or the routers connection to the net?

When did you get the line installed?
Does it correlate with the weather / time of day?

Problem with bt is you have to spend 4 hours going through every conceivable fix they give you before they send an engineer. They bore the shit out of you with their robotic voiced Indian call centre. I wish you the best of luck.

I ended up getting a radio connection with a welsh government grant because bt was shit. 15mb radio Internet rocks!

Wasn't sure which it was but I've just plugged my laptop in via ethernet cable. It keeps dropping with that and wireless. So I think its the routers connection to the net.
The extension would be 8/9 years ago and the main socket i havent a clue lol it was there when we moved in 13 years ago.
I think it does. Seems to be fine when its warm and dry but it seems to dick about more in the cold and wet. I think there's a break in the cable or something like that but no one else will have that.

Dial 17070 option 2 for a quiet line test. Listen for a few minutes and see if there's static on the line. If there is report noise on the line as a normal fault; don't mention broadband or you'll go round the usual circus Thumbs Up

Dial 0898 900900 option 2, 3 then 1. Her name's Joanna. Won't fix your broadband problems, but she'll brighten your evening.

Because if the fault is on our side then we have to pay if it's their side they pay.

Well then find out either way - I have never had a broadband problem that has ever been anyones fault apart from the provider! If the fault is on your side at least you will know.

EDIT: You say 3 laptops have the same problem - excuse my lack of knowledge on these matters but how can it be a fault on your end if this is the case?

I asked how long you'd had the line, but i meant connection. Connections are unstable for the first 2 weeks or so.
Log into the router and check the logs, check things like how long it's been on for and how long it's been on the net for.

Check your Signal / noise ratio (higher is better)
You might have interference on the line which can cause sufficient data loss for it to reconnect. Asking them to turn on interleaving will reduce your connection drops but add a little to your ping times.

without reading all the replies... it just seems to be an internet thing I think... you are either lucky or... well shit happens.

I've been with BT, Sky and virgin in the past... so far virgin for me has been the best. I recently signed up with 3 for mobile broadband... so far the connection has been 2 out of 5 at its worst and still can't display web pages at times.

I think maybe technology has passed the capabilities of some computers, either that or the connections can't keep up with the modern home user.

My mobile connection is supposed to be about 24mbps, so far I've only seen about 200kbps top speed.

It's just a case of find out where the peak bands are and work around them I'm afraid....

How's the router set up? As you got it? DHCP? Does switching it off always clear it?

Bit late now, but BT? Shocked I worked in ICT for the Fire Service and they handled 999 lines like they were consumer lines. Absolute joke. Line down? Ooo, we'll get an engineer out in a day Shocked

You said you had a BT router, their equipment get them to sort it or tell them your thinking of changing provider

Thumbs Up

Set up a ping on one of your machines... just go to start > run. type cmd and press enter.
type ping bbc.co.uk -t

Let that keep going until you see a drop in the line.

Log in to the routers IP address and check it logs to see if it throws up an error.

3 MiFi Dongle?

I use one of them (we're out in the sticks and BT is all copper and sub 1Mb) and get a pretty constant 10Mb dl and 4Mb ul. I think that's all to do with how near to you the local 3 mast is.

Never had any problems with our BT home hub, and its rammed behind the TV in the corner of the room in the living room, and i'm upstairs...

If you're getting signal problems on a laptop right near it then the router must be nuts, or interfering, try changing the channels around

What OS are you using?

I had a problem where my mums laptop couldn't connect to the router if the channel was set to anything above 10 and if the routers channel is on autoselect, it will automatically change channels and possible DC you Question

Rereading your post it seems that all of your are being dropped from the signal at once, seems like a dodgy router to me. Is the connection to the internet being dropped, or the whole connection to the router?

Had exactly the same issue has you constantly getting put through to a useless call centre in god knows where, they never helped and wouldn't send an engineer out. In the end cancelled BT (at great Expense) and went with Virgin. Will NEVER use BT again.

We had a similar problem, only there was a bad crackle on the line from our end, but fine at the other end. Do you use your line for calls and are they ok? Quite often we would have to give up and use our mobiles instead.

Turns out someone twatted the wee tombstone type pillar in the street and moisture got in. We'd been going through the dodgy connection crap for months when it was a quick fix for BT

Spoke to Bt just. There's a fault on the line between the exchange and us. So he "fixed" it using his computer, it recconnected then dropped again. So he did what he did before and it seems to have sorted it for now, he's set it to be kept an eye on for the next 24 hours to see if the fault persists. Shame i had to threaten to stop paying the bill (even though i dont pay it lol) to get them to do something

By fixing it he has probably reset your speed profile and turned on interleaving. Have a look and see what your sync speed is now, then check again in a few days time.
