Hi all, just need some advice about fork rebuild. I'm all ok about changing the seals etc it's just what grade of oil to use. I'm a big lad at about 20 stone and the forks where a bit soft( no surprising ), I was thinking of using 20w oil with a spacer on top of the spring. Do you think this would be ok. Cheers for any advice. Jim.

Ideally you want to get a spirng that is correct for your weight if possible.

The spacer will add pre-load to the spring, however it'll still be the same basic spring which will probably not be designed for a range that includes your weight.
Thicker oil will make damping stiffer, but this doesn't address the spring.

However, if budget is tight, try a thicker oil and preloaded spring to see how it feels - it's a bodge that can make things better if not ideal.

Right, the way I have gone is I have used 15wt oil and spaced with 4x 2 pence pieces per fork. Will fit them tomorrow and when the weather gets better ill try them out. But they are stiffer than before.

If you suck the same amount of oil out each side, you can then add lighter or heavier to make a mix somewhere inbetween if you want a bit of 'fine tuning'.

Remember the air gap also gives some 'tuning' potential near the bottom of the stroke too.

Hi all, just been out on the bike and what can I say. Totally different ride, just the right stiffness in the forks and no leaks.
