PostPosted: 16:41 - 29 Apr 2012    Post subject: Using different engines Reply with quote

Hi, looking at a project as my next bike and was wondering what happens insurance wise if i use an engine from a different bike.
ATM I'm looking at a gsxr1100 because its dirt cheap to insure for me when compared to other bikes.
So far I think that early bandit 6/12 engines and all other gsxr engines from similar years will fit it.
But, what would I do insurance wise?
If i put a bandit 600 engine in would it actually reduce my premium or the opposite for the more expensive to insure gsxr 750?
thanks

Firstly why on earth would you want to put a 600 engine in an 1100?
Secondlt it will increase your insurance as its a modification.

Would be which ever engine I could find cheapest so could be either.
Its cheaper to insure the bigger bike for me but Im on a restricted license so wouldnt benefit from the larger engine.

the gsxr 1100 is cheaper to insure -> insurance quotes are done through frame model.
The engine I choose to put in would be which ever is available at the right price.
I just wanted to see what effect a different engine would have on insurance.
Not concerned with size of engine because It will be restricted to 33bhp anyway.

edit: To avoid confusion and to dumb it down.
Ive seen a rolling chassis for a gsxr1100 for sale locally and need an engine for it !

why do you want a gsxr1100 rolling frame to then try and find an engine to put in it which will be way under what it should be then theres the question when you go to sell it of just why? no point spending money on something thats no better that what you already have, its just a waste

didn't you say on your other thread that the reason you didn't want to put the T'cat back to standard to save on insurance was due to the cost?

because what you are planning here will far far outweight the cost of putting a few standard bits back on your current bike!

why oh why are you sooo desperate to get shot of a really capable bike, you haven't even tried it unrestricted yet!!

Depends what year 1100 it is to start with, oil cooled ones are OK but they went to water cooled and the oil cooled lumps won't fit without serious modifications.
Insurance quotes aren't done " through the frame model" other than a totally standard bike.
Doesn't matter what engine you put into it, other than another 1100 it will become a modified bike and insurance will rocket even if it's a restricted 600 Bandit/Teapot one.

Jeeez.

Fuuuuuuuuuu.

I despair at the human race. I really do.

Do you KNOW what a rolling chassis is? Its forks, frame, wheels and maybe tyres and swinging arm. That is it.

In order to fit a new engine, you'll need the wiring loom from the new engine, the coils, the ECU, the carbs, the chain, sprockets and spacers etc. You might also need different wheel spacers, or cush drive. You might need a different length throttle cable, you'll certainly need a different exhaust etc etc etc.

Buying a rolling chassis because it is cheap is foolish. Buying it because you want a project is OK. If you want a cheap bike, buy a cheap bike.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

You won't be able to ride a GSXR1100 on a restriction even if it makes 33hp. New legislation limits the amount of restriction you can have, so don't waste your time.

Doesn't that refer to the restriction coming in January? in which case it doesn't apply to me, as far as Im concerned I could restrict a busa if i wanted to.

Anyways, this thread is irrelevant now.
Picking up a cheap 2005 Kawasaki Zr7 tomorrow?
Viewed it tonight and its brilliant Very Happy
Thanks anyway guys.

The thought of someone ruining a GSXR1100 by putting a bandit 600 engine in it is almost enough to bring me to chunder.
