Bike Stood for a long time, not starting - SOLVED!!!

Hi,

Bike: 2008 YZY-R1 - Fuel Injected

Got all my parts(new ignition & ECU) for my R1 now, all fitted, it turns over which is a start. I have replaced the fuel, charged the battery and it doesn't fire. It has been stood for 10 months.

Any good tips for getting it started? Or shall I just keep trying to turn it over?

Also I will get flamed for this but a little squirt of easy start for the first time won't do much harm and if it runs for a second and then cuts out, you know it is a fuel issue. If it doesn't run at all, you know it is an electrical issue.

Yeah I was thinking the plugs, pain in the backside to get to though.

You wont get flamed, good thinking with the easy start, i'll try that. Where do you squirt it on a fuel injected bike? Down the intakes under the tank like you would on a carbed bike? Or is it different?

When I bought my intruder 125 that wouldn't start after sitting for almost 3 years... I left the fuel that was still in there, didn't really do anything to it to be honest, because I hadn't paid for it at that point I was told not to touch anything... anyway me and a friend just turned the idle up as high as it would go then tried bump starting it on a small hill... on the third attempt it started.

I'm a dumbo, but it is either spark or petrol. Does it have both? Have you tested this? Any other suggestions are pointless unless you know what the actual issue is.

It has 5 litres of fresh fuel in there. More info may help, here it comes;


So a bit of background first;

Bike got stolen over a year ago, I got it back...YEY...The ECU was missing and ignition was broken, so I replaced the whole lockset. Replaced with new fuel.

So, it all turns on, turns over but does not fire. There is a different look to the dash though. The temperature is stating 'HI' The fuel light is flashing(not normal), even though there is 5 liters of fresh juice in there AND I noticed the imobileser light doesn't flash anymore when the ignition is set to off.

Any ideas? Will a ECU reset work? I have the magic red key, but have no idea what to do with it, turns out putting it in the ignition and hoping doesn't cut the mustard!

Check the silly things, clutch/ sidestand etc. and the associated kill switches. Maybe crank it with a plug out and earthed to see if you are actually getting a spark. I wouldn't bother changing the plugs unless they needed doing before hand.

How long did you try to start it for?

Can take a few goes for the fuel to be where it needs to be.

Did you plug the fuel pump in? The flashes will probably be a code.

Super stuff Chris, thanks for that, strangely I am on that forum and searched it. Must be me.

It certainly makes sense for the immobiliser wire to be cut if the would-be-theif was that dumb.

I will give the bike a once over and check the plugs out as well, but as these bikes are SO smart these days would it spark if that wire was cut/damaged? Just a thought, I don't know what it shuts off if it has been tampered with.

Solved the little trickster, it was indeed a severed wire on the immobiliser wire, tip of the cap to you Chris! I soldered it back up and she runs a treat now.

It was the wire that runs off the key set I bought, and not on the wire on the bike which I thought it could have been. Who would have thought.

Oh and the flashing fuel light was my fault as when I put the tank back on I didn't put the electrical cables back on the connectors.

It spluttered and struggled to start with, then ran as per normal.
