Posted this in racing & track days but haven't had a response yet and am looking to book in the next couple of days so thought I would put it in here:

Reckon this will last a track day at Rockingham before I replace it? Thinking about doing the one on Sunday 13th May if anyone's up for it?

Did one at Mallory Park the other day and the track was covered in standing water in a lot of places and it didn't feel that bad at all!

The sides of it are fine but the middle of it is pretty bald from wheelies and attempting the odd one when the tires weren't warm enough or it was too wet and it has spun up.

Lean more, don't ride straight.

You should get a trackday or two out of that, just don't ride with it like that on the road.

I do lean it when I get the chance to...often busy with traffic on the way to work so can't Sad

Why not ride it on the road like that?

Err...

1.) Because the police would take a dim view

2.) Because you don't lean on the road anywhere near as much as you do on a trackday.

I'm not willing to pay for a new tyre to be put on before the track day (it's only two weeks away), then the old one back on for the day and then for the new one to be put back on again. I'll just ride it to work and back and pop it on the trailer for the track day. Laughing

Two things:

1.) You fail for using an adjustable spanner.

2.) That tyre is going to be lethal in the wet.

Just change the tyre before the track day, you might bin it next time it rains on your way to work or get pulled otherwise.

A track day is mostly going to wear the sides of the tyre anyway so it shouldn't affect tyre life of your new hoops too much.

Also, why are you commuting on what appears to be pilot powers? Mine lasted less than 3k before they were worn out, might be worth investing in something more sports touring orientated, like the pilot road 2.

IIRC it is the same pilot power compound on the edges but with a harder more durable centre.

Shame you are at the bottom of the country.

I would hook you up with a set of metzeler racetecs scrubs for cheap.

1.) You fail for actually giving a fuck about what sort of spanner is sat on my driveway... Laughing

2.) Rode it to work this morning in the rain and it was fine...just got to be smooth and not give it a handful middle of corner which is simple stuff!

I picked them because I do a lot of fast riding in between commuting but I can definitely see where you are coming from, I've only had them on there about 3 months and they are nackered!

Considering the Pilot Road 2's...do you know what the differences between these and the new 3's are? Are they still going to be nice and grippy on the track in the dry?

How long you holding on to them for? I'm doing both Donington & Oulton Park in July and will be in Sheffield?

My brother took a pair of PR2 on two trackdays, he didn't have any issues with them but clearly it depends on pace. If you are a rather quick rider you may well reach the limits of the tyre.

I did like my pilot powers, but very much like yours, I destroyed the middle with commuting duties. I now use pirelli angel ST, they grip well and are very good in the wet but the profile is a bit lazier than the powers and the tyre life isn't as good as the PR2.

The ideal solution would be another set of track wheels with sticky track rubber and street wheels with a dual compound sports touring rubber.

If you're going down the sports touring tyre route try the 023's as well.

I've got a set on mine and if I was about over the next few weeks I'd say you're welcome to come have a go on my bike and see what you think of them but sadly I'm at uni for another month or so.

They should last me 10k though, and are very good in the wet, dry, cold, damp etc so a good all round tyre.

I looked at the PR3's instead, they're fantastic in the wet apparently but there are better options for the dry.... perhaps I should have gone for them seeing as I live in wales whilst at uni Laughing

Probably best to replace it tbh. You might hit the canvas in the middle and then you'll have to get it changed at the track which narrows your tyre choice massively and it can also be quite expensive.

Give it a try and see what happens. Bring a spare just in case.

Decided to just rinse the end of this tyre and replace it for the track day, just ordered the pilot road 3 after reading the reviews Very Happy the weather was just to nice to ride slow and save the tyre when I came out of work!

May have to do a cheeky burn out to finish it off if paddy at the garage let's me do it down there. Laughing
