Afternoon all,

Just signed up, seems there's a whole wealth of information which I will soon start reading!

I'm 21 at the end of the month and so will be taking my "A" tests to gain an unrestricted license.

Obviously I also need to do a theory test, which leads me to my question. Can I take my theory test before I'm 21 to then do an A mod1 and mod 2 for which I need to be over 21. Seems an obvious question really as the theory is the same no matter what category test you take but I wanted to make sure before spending time and money.

Also, a lot of bike training schools say you HAVE to do a DAS course to get an A license, thats rubbish isnt it?

Cheers
Tom

You can do your theory test, but you cannot do your DAS before you are 21. As soon as your turn 21, you can do your module 1 and 2 DAS. You don't have to do the DAS to get A, but you have to do it if you want no restrictions. You can do the A test which 17 year olds do, but they have a restriction period of 33 bhp for two years.

If you want your unrestricted A licence, you HAVE to pass your DAS this year. In January, you have to wait until you're 24 as they are changing the law

To get a full A license you need to take the tests on a bike of at least 46bhp, which generally means doing a DAS course, but you can get a bike down there yourself and insure it etc if you want.

To get a restricted A license you need to take mod1/2 on a 125cc bike.

The restricted A license allows you to ride bikes with a maximum power of 33bhp. After 2 years the restricted license will automatically upgrade and you can ride any bike.

Theory test - yes, everything is fine there. I did my theory just under 2 years ago, I've recently turned 21 and will be doing DAS. No issue.

Ok so I can do my theory now while I'm 20 ready to do the practical tests when I'm over 21. I shall get it booked Smile

The DSA website has the option to book a Big Bike Mod1 and Mod2. Why can't I just have some training and book the tests with out doing a DAS?

Posted before I saw your reply. My "missus" has a GPZ500 which I will insure and use for the test. I will book some separate training and then book my tests separately with no DAS nonsense.

Then I will buy an R1. Jokes :p

Just so we're clear, "DAS" has no, uh... clear meaning. It can refer to sitting your tests on a "big" bike (35kW+) and there are "DAS" certified instructors, but there's not really any such thing as a DAS course per se.

You're quite right that you can do this, if can find an insurer who will cover you on that bike under your provisional entitlement. It's perfectly fine for them to do so, but many of them won't want to. You'll have to ride bitch down to the test centre, of course. Wink

Depending on how confident you are, and if you have some Shifty "private land" Shifty available to practice on, you could miss out the training altogether. There's absolutely no requirement to have any training beyond the CBT

And now over to Mike for some words about tiddlers. Very Happy

To be honest, I have no intention of doing any training. Thought I would probably get flamed for saying that though!

I've done two CBTs as he first expired and so spent most of the 2nd one going through mod1 and mod2 stuff with the trainer.

Ive also been riding my partners 125 around for the last year so I'm fairly happy and have been riding all sorts of bikes round fields since I was quite young so comfortable on a bike.

And even If I fail its still cheaper than a DAS course and at least I will know where I went wrong.

I shall book my theory this month, and then get the practicals booked up!

Any advice on first bikes? I'm thinking either 500's or something like a ZZR600 which I will restrict for a little while until I'm happy.
