I'm going to have to mention the GTX 550ti as before. I would avoid ATi as their drivers are horse shit.

This card is a brilliant budget card as I am using one right now. I bought it when it was a new model so it has gotten cheaper. It plays Blu rays like a dream!

If anything, for under £100, I would get the 550ti. Linky to Ebuyer

Compare any graphics card to the legendary 8800 GTS 512mb

https://www.hwcompare.com/9815/geforce-8800-gt-512mb-vs-geforce-gtx-550-ti/

GTX 550 Ti is leaps and bounds better, meaning its a bloody awesome graphics card.

Question is, Can your processor handle what ever you plan on running with that graphics card... and does your power supply unit give enough juice to run it? I'm going to assume it needs at least 400w which means you will need at least a 500w PSU with a 6 pin PCI-E power cable on it Smile

you can pick up amd 6850 for sub 100 which according to the site imark posted, has more gut (is more expensive tho)

what res you going to be running, what other hardware are you running.

Radeon HD 6850 has slightly lower Core Speed (775mhz vs 900mhz) but overall has better Bandwidth, Texel and Pixel Rates.

"Shader Speed (N/A) MHz"
not sure what that is suggesting but the GTX 550 Ti has 1800mhz ... I'm sure the shader speed for the Radeon HD 6850 can be found elsewhere though.

6870 1gb, I have it, if you're going to spend a 1er on a card you can stretch to £120.

Get it, anything less won't be powerful enough for Battlefield 3 at max res + detail (assuming you want to play modern games).

The Radeon 7770 would what I would (and did) go for at about the same price range.

problem with that is that is the 6850 is actually more powerful the 7770. the 7770 does however use less power than the 6850

I got a HD4890 that has kept me going for 2 years now, and it's still pretty high-end, 850mhz 1gb GDDR5

But I'm thinking of going to nvidia and was looking at the card that's been posted repeatedly, ATI drivers are indeed shit, and the card is massive and loud Neutral

if you think your gonna get better drivers with nvidia, think again. and all modern high cards are load, how else do they disopate 100+w of heat (well closer to 200w for the 4890).

the 850mhz of the 4890 will do less than a for more energy than a newer card. the 7850 for example uses 60 watts less power but outperforms the 4890 by a sizeable chunk. alos the 550ti is outperformed by the 4890 but uses more than 70w less poewr

I'm going to echo the sentiments of one of the above posters. Go for the 6870. Is only marginally more but will get you into that territory where you can play all the new games at high to ultra detail provided you are not multiscreening.

I still have one of those fitted and one still shiny in a box that I never hooked up into Xfire on a C2D OCd to 3.5.

Still runs pretty much everything but on the new stuff you do tend to have to sacrifice detail for FPS, Metro was an example and it wont do Skyrim on full without chugging a bit.

OP never said what he plans to do with it though, as there are a lot of factors that can influence your choice.
