How would one go about knowing what to look for? |
Steel liner is steel, a slight dull blue-grey colour and usually cross-hatched in the honing marks.
Nikasil, is a Hard Chrome plating. It will be a lot shinier, and more silvery.
Look at the 'hard Chrome' on your forks, THAT is more like what Nikasil will look like.
Look at a bearing, from an engine or wheel, or better still a soft white metal bearing from a big-end cap; THAT is more like what a steel liner will look like.
You may also tell from the top of the barel. Nikcasil chrome is often applied direct to the aluminium of the barel. Steel liner will be a thick tube of steel shrunk into the ali, so you ought to see the actual material boundry in distinct concentric circles around teh bore... but not always, sometimes barels have nikasil chromed steel liners. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Use a magnet. If it sticks - steel/iron, if it doesn't - aluminium ally & nikasil plating. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
