PostPosted: 20:09 - 09 May 2012    Post subject: average speed check zones Reply with quote

Ive spent a lot of time this week driving to and from Swidon via the M5/M4 interchange which at the moment is scattered in road works with Average Speed Check areas marked up at 50Mph....

Now unless someone knows something I dont, I didnt think a car could find a single way around this one, unless the cameras arnt hooked up.. however I daily see cars fly past me doing atleast 60 possibly more..

So am I missing something? Do they know something I dont...
Interestingly, these zones obviously apply to bikes using the motorways but can the cameras actually catch out bikers braking the limits as they are forward facing.. ive heard from others that changing lanes fools the cameras but im pretty sure this is nonsense..

share with me your knowledge if you know more.. Very Happy

Thin layer of hairspray on the front of the car renders it invisible to cameras.

I thought that speed cameras did a normal photo and then a secondary InfraRed one which can see through any stuff that you put on the plates?

Or do average speed checks not do that?

It's where the rules of science meet the laws of physics. No one can really explain what happens to the folk who ignore Average Speed Camera systems.

Bikes cannot be caught by the yellow SPECS average speed cameras, unless for some odd reason you have a front facing numberplate...

Many aren't even on. You'll notice the IR emitter's glow dim red at night, but some don't, I'm guessing the ones that don't glow aren't working. For sure, none that I've seen marked 'not in use' have had glowing IR emitters.

Where?

They usually face oncoming traffic.

I have only seen one that 'looked' as though it was set to pick up rear plates but I assume that was just due to it not being required to cover that section of road. It was at the end/beginning of a contra-flow.

They can be linked to police force systems and alert police to live speeders but I think that is exceptional.

Average speed cameras cant detect bike plates otherwise I would have been done by now as they had them on the A80 when it was being made into the M80 for 2.5 years.

It could be the cameras down your way aren't actually connected or working, as people in the know regarding their operation (i.e highway agency etc) so they will drive faster than the posted limit as they know they wont get done, hence why some cagers are passing by you.

Possible explanations:

1) They're all coppers on a call.
2) They're work vehicles and their employer has agreed to give a "don't know, could have been anybody" answer to the Section 172.
3) They're lawyers who have determined that there's no Traffic Order in place to validate the limit.
4) They're idiots who see some another idiot doing it, and reckon that it's OK.

Can you guess which I think is most likely?

Funniest thing is seeing people brake for them, then speed back up again.

Can they even detect motorbikes?

Some of those who blast through SPECS are prolly in rentals and from foreign shores. Almost always allowed to go free though detected.
Speed cameras are triggered at:
Whatever the speed limit for the road is plus 10% plus 1mph.
So for A 50mph SPECS/Gatso/Truvelo you'd be cool at 56 mph.
What bursts me is the folk who trust the speedo.
When they see 50mph on the speedo they're only doing 47mph.
I`ve checked several speedos against gps and can safely say most speedos indicate slightly more than actual speed.
I have corroborate the gps against other gps to reduce error.
What it means is on a 50mph SPECS system I'd drive/ride at the gps indicated speed of 56mph but I then meet folk keeping a steady 47mph who think I'm speeding.
But I'm within the legal threshold. OSmile

As above - if it is say 56mph the limit and your speedo is out by a good chunk as most are, actually they're doing 55mph on their GPS and it just appears to be 10mph than your '50mph' because you're actually doing 46mph.

Apparently SPECS 3 can be rear facing and the A13 at least had a trial of this.

Southend has quite a few rear facing SPECS cams. They have just recently put a new set on the Seafront here (at 20mph!! Its agonisingly slow!). The A127 I think is getting rear facing cams at some point - but they are forward facing at the moment.

I drive through there on a regular basis. I wouldn't worry, people like to push the boundries where they can. Personally I don't see the point for a 5 min shorter journey time but some people are impatient.
