my old sony Cybershot DSC F828 finally died
it won't come on and fails to see the 2 memory cards
but seeing as I've had it for about 10 years and it has served well its time for a new camera

looking at the Canon EOS range as I got to use one to do a wedding last week
used it on a lot of settings but loved the burst mode, Ideal for group pic's
when there all looking everywhere and you want to get the best shot
worked great with the onboard or hotshoe flash I used

looking at a 40 model, I know its not a new model but plenty of good second hand ones or sales with extra's thrown in
budget is £600 - 800
looking for recommendations

I was looking for a DSLR after using one at my Brother's wedding just before the New Year. After much research, comparison and fretting, I opted for a recent model rather than the latest outpouring, finally purchasing a manufacturer refurb from the Canon outlet on Fleabay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/canon_uk1/m.html?[url]. I got a EOS 500 D with kit lens for £300. It was absolutely mint and was only showing 60 shutter operations.

My other option was https://www.bignorman.com/, but being after Christmas, wasn't holding much stock.

Beware if you find a deal that looks too good to be true. There are a number of very legit looking websites that when you are a clone of a genuine website. A quick google check flags up the punters who have come acrop bleating on the photography forums.

Hi

While I have Canon equipment, I wouldn't disregard any of the major makes of dSLR. If you have access to Canon / Nikon / Sony lenses then it would make sense to stick with them.

The expensive bit is the lenses, and also they are the bit that hold their value. I would be inclined to spend the money on lenses.

Don't worry too much about mega pixels. Ceased to be a real issue ages ago!

All the best

Keith

I should do more research on the lenses, I only have a couple of filters and a good fish eye that fit on my sony & also my canon camcorder

This is a great site for second hand stuff.

https://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/

Jesops were also doing a deal on a canon 500D recently that comes with the standard wide angle lense and a 70-300 mm zoom lense and all for under £500. I pick mine up about 3 months ago and I have been very happy with the setup, I even got a free class 10 4 gig card as they were running a promotion at the time.

having looked around (thanks for the links) I've seen that I can get a good body for about £300 - 400
then some good deals on lenses, memory cards & spare battery's
I'll be doing a lot of promotional stuff soon and will be taking lots of pic's
so need something decent to work with and I may be able to get it for the bottom range of my budget

I'm not a photographer by a long way but I know the basics so a lot of the lenses are beyond me or my needs
I already have a good Canon camcorder so I don't need the cam to do video just pic's
but it seems its a standard feature. a decent memory card is also a consideration
but as I took 800 pic's onto a 2gb and had some space left I think a 16 - 32 will be overkill for my needs

will let you know what I get when I decide
