 |
|
Normally I would just service the bike myself and keep the receipts and stuff.
However, my new bikes got a full service history at dealers to its current mileage, and I feel in some ways I aught to keep it that way. Even if I do the odd bits myself (like plugs etc) I think I should get an oil and filter and a dealer to keep the nice book up to date.
So how much do you pay for an oil and filter change and at which dealer? ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Do it yourself, keep the receipts.
Or bank on getting charged twice the price of the oil & filter plus one hour's labour, even though it's a 20 minute job. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

A 2002 Fazer? I'd just staple the receipts into the service history. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Going to find out soon... don't think I have any choice but to go to a KTM certified garage if I want to keep my warranty, which I do I always serviced my old DRZ 400 by myself, it was easy as anything, pretty much fully serviced that bike while I had it - coolant, brake fluid etc. along with the minor service stuff. It was £25 for 4 litres of Motul semi oil (enough for 2 oil changes + some left over) + £5 for a filter, which is needed every other change - and cleaning the air filter is free so quite cheap for the DIY option plus you know it's been done right. ____________________ KTM 990 SMT & Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM |

Nah, I have no objection with that. This is my 2006 FZ6. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

I don't pay for services, I just get the bits and find some lovely lovely person to do the rest for me.
Last time I 'did it myself' I ended up gently riding my bike over to the garage 14miles from home to get the brakes bled...so I could have brakes again...thankfully the sv was well known for excellent engine braking. But it was a wee bit scarey. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

Just wanted to chuck another angle out there on the cost situation. I work away all week so my weekends are precious to me. I would rather pay £170 for a service than £50 for the parts and then spend a day tinkering in the garage as I'm not into the mechanical side of it and get no enjoyment out of it at all. Therefore for me the £120 is worth it
Everyone's situation is different, as is everyone's perception of value for money. |

Lol not quite the replies I was expecting.
Yes I'm fully aware that it will cost me £50 in parts to do an oil and filter change. I'm also fully capable of doing an oil and filter change myself. I've never paid anyone to do any work on any of my bikes and I've changed pretty much every consumable possible.
See, I don't have any objection paying (for this bike) £88 for an oil and filter change providing the stuff they use is decent. I do however object to paying £150 at my local dealer.
Hence the reason why I'm asking what people pay. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Get the first (free) service done and book stamped, and from then on keep your own detailed record of work done.
You can get an accounts book from WH Smith that is ideal for recording date, mileage and details of work done - and keep all receipts in a separate folder.
Take pictures of any dismantling and adjusting that needs doing, and keep them in a photo album or on a CD ROM.
As a potential buyer, I would put more value on an 'enthusiast-maintained' bike with proper records, than one that had been serviced by some of the garages that I have had the misfortune to deal with. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)
