You've overfilled the oil, and it's splashing up the crank case breather, into the airbox, and draining out of the airbox from the airbox drain. The drain is most likely on the side of the sidestand. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Hi it could well be that it's overfull which may be forcing oil up a breather into the airbox as I don't think there is many places for a leak on the left of the engine apart from the gear change shaft. maybe drain the oil out and refill carefully on center stand until its just below the top of the sight glass, mine takes a while to settle while filling so I put it in slowly once it gets somewhere near the right amount.
If it is overfull you can do damage to the engine by running it so do it asap. ____________________ Hyosung cruise 125(passed test on, sold) Kawasaki el 252 (better than expected but sold on) Kawasaki GPZ500S first "big"bike.(sold) ZZR600 E5..Z750 2007,ER5, currently on a 2008 Enfield bullet electra x and loving it..

It could be the drive seal, or the gear selector seal, but since he's already said that it's over-filled with oil, that's the first thing to sort. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Alrite guys. I'm going to drain all the oil and refill it so it's obviously below the max indicator. As i'm taking it over to my uncles who definitely knows what he's doing, we'll (he will) look at other areas including those mentioned above. I get to see this operation in ation and so get to learn a lot for the future, so you could say my issues will enable me to learn more about general maintenance and repairs
BTW. When i got the bike it had a oil change literally the day before. Also, just noticed the inside of the filler cap is milky white and the sight glass has a white-ish appearance. Maybe condensation.

Eek, it had never even occurred to me that you hadn't done an oil change as soon as you got it. It's the first thing I do on any purchased vehicle, regardless of what it might say on any service history. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Just to be a pedant, the primary drive is between the crank and the gearbox (or the crank and the clutch). The seal behind the front sprocket would be the output shaft seal.
The "primary drive seal" would be the oil seals on the main bearings in a two stroke. In four strokes the bottom end and gearbox/clutch is normally all in the same oil bath anyway. Replacing the crank oil seals on a two stroke s quite a major job as you need to split the crankcases!

Would anyone be able to describe how I would go about accessing/ removing/ replacing the primary drive seal? specifically for the GPZ 500s A3 model (1990).
I ask because I want to t sort this out but my haynes manual does not deal with this operation. I don't have that ability to just 'do it'. I kind of need some guidance to direct me.
Thanks |
