My dads just rang me from the bmf to tell me a certain markee/stall/thing is doing a £5 special... everything for a pound, apparently for a few hours only... I dont know Im not there.

Anyway he rang me and hes got me a spare jacket (apparently 3 isnt enough, but hey ho lets not be ungrateful) and a helmet reduced from £180. He said its an 'FM' one, Ive never heard of these... are they any good?

I guess anything is better than my 12 year old shoei? And they all have to pass a minimal test to be legal dont they?

FM were italian. Very popular in the 80's they did EU legal 'copy' of the Simpson Starwars called the 'Galacktika', that was a favourite of the eLCie boys.

Believe that the same factory knocked out hats for a couple of brands, but cant remember which, & I had a feeling that they were bought out by Sharke or some-one like that. Haven't seen them under FM brand for quite a few years, but could be still going. Always budget to mid-range brand.

Bought from show, unseen, for a fiver? Could be worth a punt... you might use it for a headlamp shell or novelty ash-tray if it's no good.

But you buy on fit-first and any hat that dont fit ent no good.

When I fold helmets, hats came in two shapes, Aria's or Shoei's, if Aria wasn't comfy you put them in a Shoei, if they couldn't afford the Shoei, you showed them AGV's, if they couldn't afford an Arai you showed them a Shark or a Nolan.... and if you couldn't find ANYTHING to fit them.... you pulled an FM off the shelf!

They were a more unusual fitting! You have been warned.

Also, possible that an FM Show-Special could be as OLD as your Shoei!

Just look for the relevant CE markings on the helmet, strap and visor if they're on they're of a good standard.

FM were italian brand made just outside venice in the industrial region, also known as FiMez (fabrique injection moulding etc etc), I went to the factory in late 98 as the importer ran a reward system of sell 250 helmets and get a free trip to italy

AFAIK they went out of business when all the chinese crap hit the market and they couldn't compete because you could buy a nitro/duchinni for £8 from china, and they make a profit on that £8!

at the time we were paying £25 trade for an FM axe, and selling them for £40-£45

Bought one for £50 when I started riding, only complaint I could have with it was the weight but you soon get used to it.

Had an accident in it at about 30 mph and helmet took a fair whack, stood up to it well so can't complain about that.

My FM helmet did me proud in my accident way back when. No complaints from me.

However, it's not about cost or brand or anything else, what matters is FIT. Does it fit your head? Is it comfortable or do you have pressure points?

It still makes me wonder, why brand and 'what is best' still come up in topics on a frequent basis...do you peeps not read or do searches?
