Sadly my old Suzuki GN is coming to the end so I'm looking for a replacement 125. I've seen a 2003 Hyosung GT125 Comet (naked looking bike) for sale not too far from me. I like the look of the bike, seems a big bigger than the GN which would be a bonus!
I've done some web searching on this bike and it seems a pretty descent machine, I'd like to know if anyone on here owns or has owned one? Anything specific to look out for, common faults, good/bad points in general. Thanks in advance. Thumbs Up

Because they are the old model.

They needed to iron out all the crap bits.

The old rear shocks were shit, the old cam chain tensioners were shit...

Its better going for a newer model.

Ok, thanks for the heads up. On a bit of a budget so the newer ones will be out unfortunately. Neutral

My first bike! Love it to bits, never had a thing go wrong with it. Yes, they're not the fastest 125 in the world, but it has that "big bike" look and feel to it.

Mine was one of the later models, I think they look better as well as being mechanically better.

Based on a workmate's experience with a 2006 that was left sitting around for a year, seized solid and needed a shedload[1] of bits replaced, I wouldn't touch one.

For all the time they've been sold in the UK, parts are still hard to get. If you need to look beyond the basic consumables on WeMoto, then you're into importing direct from Korea, or gambling on salvage parts, which are likely to have the same issues as the bits that need replacing.

Not a fan, and they're not even cheap.

[1] Swing arm corroded through, replacing it required taking the exhaust off, which wrecked it and required a head removal to smash the remains out, rear brake master cylinder seized and shagged, instrument panel fried, both tyres needed re-seated, front axle clamp bolts seized solid, horn connectors corroded, plus a bunch of minor stuff.

My lad has an 05 model.

From what I gather. having to work on it once or twice...
Bad bits first...

Parts are not that easy to come by. We use eBay or StartRight in Leeds.

The carb rubbers on his are hard and look like they'll split. This makes putting them on the carbs/airbox difficult. However, that's an issue with many bikes.

Had to replace coils. That's how airbox rubber refitting discovered.

The foot pegs are likely to break if bike dropped at any speed.

The riding position can take getting used to. He's 6'3" and with damage knees from rugby now not finding it that comfortable.

No centre stand to need paddock stand for maintenance. Again many bike share this issue so not really a big one. Just mentioning it for completeness.

Good points...

Despite the points mentioned above he's had no problems with the engine.

Servicing is relatively straightforward although best get a set of allen key (hex) sockets.

Bike is easy to ride. Good in town with good acceleration in first 3 gears. It'll cruise ok at 60/70mph on the NSL limit roads.

A bikini fairing or fly screen helps long distance commutes.

The bike has the on road presence of a bigger machine. That makes it less likely (despite L plates) to be abused by car drivers.

Overall he likes the bike and when he gets his licence is already looking for another V-twin.

Hope this helps. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the post, the GN isn't the fastest thing to ever grace the road so the speed isn't too much of a concern. My commute to work is around 6 miles each way so not worried if it poodles along. Laughing

Thanks for these comments gents, the reviews I found online seem to be written by people who've owned the bike from new or for a month of so which doesn't give much indication to 'long term' ownership and the problems that may or may not come with it.

Well I sold it on to a friend in July 2009 who got rid in September 2011, in that time it needed an exhaust, rear shock, new switchgear, CDI, handle bars and the lights stopped working in the clocks Laughing

Had an 05 125 comet which was so good I traded up to an gt250r once I passed.

Both of mine spent life outside, had a lot of electrical problems with the 250 but they were down to the previous owner.

As with any bike, keep on top of the maintenance and they're all good. Especially good for the long legged riders like myself.

That's the appeal for me, when I ride the GN I'm sitting where the pillion rider would be sitting. Laughing
